Is ‘Bella Swan’ the new ‘Princess Leia’?
With October officially underway, it’s time to think of ghouls & ghosts, monsters & murderers, and all other Halloween creatures…specifically vampires. Now unless you’ve been on the Moon all year, you should already know that vampires have gotten a the HUGE push because of the unexpected success of last year’s Twilight. But based on the monstrous popularity of the series here’s something I’ve been pondering for a while now:

“How similar is Kristen Stewart’s “Bella Swan” to Carrie Fisher’s “Princess Leia”…from strictly a fan base point of view?” It’s very well known that they both have a huge following but only now since it’s kind of cool to be a movie and ‘comic-con’ geek, (plus handy dandy internet providing all sorts of fan-friendly info) it looks as if Kristen Stewart is just as coveted as the immortal Carrie Fisher herself.
They’re both hounded and honored by fans (men and women alike), yet only Princess Leia is a hero in her own right and is popular enough to get people to dress like her for Halloween, Comic conventions (or for lucky boyfriends) around the globe. No one wants to dress up like Bella (some clumsy teenager) so Leia wins that one. However, Bella has the glamorous lifestyle of being that clumsy teenager who is in love with a Vampire, so that gets the whole ‘love stricken’ fan base out there going wild. I mean, you can’t really cheer for Leia to kiss Han since Empire and Jedi aren’t set up as a love story, so Bella wins that one. But whatever rationale people use to be fans of the series and follow the characters, they are still undoubtedly lovingly adored.
So I furthers ask, considering the popularity of these two actresses (and the characters they play) do their respective roles garner so much attention it can prove to be a pigeon-holed career ending role? Carrie Fisher went into writing after Star Wars but what will become of Kristen after Breaking Dawn?? Will she forever be overshadowed by her role in Twilight and haunted by it forever? Well not really haunted in the sense that Linda Blair was haunted after The Exorcist, but you get my point right? Will she, and maybe Daniel Radcliffe plus other actors (like Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher) be dogged by fans for the rest of their lives because of their one singular and iconic role? Will that cinematic accomplishment keep them unable to run away from the blinding limelight created by the respective film franchise behemoth? It’s got me wondering, hence the subject of my post. I can’t imagine what Carrie Fisher went through and expect Kristen to find the same destiny.
But concerning Kristen Stewart, does anyone think her life play out like Galaxy Quest? That remains to be seen (except for the part where real vampires show up to the convention and ask for her help…yeah, don’t count on that). Is she already fed up with the attention she’s getting from crazy fans? Yes, that is already apparent in her public appearances. She tries to hide it but is really close to full-on showing it’s toll on her. But poor Kristen, right? It wasn’t her fault. She never knew what this would end up becoming…but I think she should take a cue from some other great actors and try dealing with the press and pressure more with more poise and grace. My humble advice Kristen: “Take a look at Hugh Jackman, so you don’t end up like Lindsey Lohan“. Carrie Fisher went through a huge bad spell trying to shrug the fame, how will KS take it all?? We can only wait and see…

Dear God I hope not (to answer your question). They look a bit alike, but the similarities stop there. At least Princess Leia can kick ass when the situation calls. All Bella Swan can do is make her moony face and whine about her perfect Edward. Gag me.

Not likely……Bella is a real person. Princess Leia is old and wrinkly….something Bella will never be (for those of you who can do more than watch movies…i.e., read).
