Ohhh, Look…Disney/Pixar Releases First 'BRAVE' Poster – UPDATED

One of the trailers before Cars 2 will be a teaser for Pixar’s upcoming fantasy film Brave. I got to see it at a pre-sceeening last night and I have to say it looks really good, although this’ll no doubt draw comparisons to Dreamworks’ How To Train Your Dragon. But in a brief statement from director Mark Andrews, he promises this will be “a bit more intense” as Brave will have some “darker elements” among with the great comedy and characters Pixar is known for. Previously there were some neat looking concept photos (I posted them after the jump) but before you all get in the theaters to see the teaser, have a look at the first official poster below and let me know what you think…

Starring Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting), Billy Connolly (The Boondock Saints), Emma Thompson (Love Actually), Robbie Coltrane (who’s freed up after the Harry Potter franchise ends) and Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy)  Brave tells the tale of  Scottish Princess Merida. She’s an unruly daughter whose not content to live by her family’s rules (sound like any other Disney Pricesses we know??). Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. Sounds good and hopefully it’s on the same level of quality in films like Legend of The Guardians. Wait, this is Pixar we’re talking about, of course it’ll be good! For those of you who missed it, here are the concept photos from a few months back…

UPDATE: Here’s a shot of the main characters – clockwise from top left: Princess Merida, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), The Wise Woman, and Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson).

As of right now, Brave is set for release next Summer on June 22nd, 2012. I’m in but I’ll ask you…Anyone interested in this yet? Anyone eager to see the teaser before Cars 2? Anyone see Cars 2 yet??

Well at the very least Cars 2 is more entertaining than the first. Leaves it in the dust for sure but this time around you get a lot more Mater and that has proved to be as offputting to Pixar fans as say…Jar Jar and The Twins:P

Definitely want to see Cars 2, it looks fun 😉 I haven’t really heard enough about Brave to be super-super excited, but I’m definitely interested in it. Hopefully some stills will be released soon……??

Can I ask, I dunno if you’re allowed, but could you describe how Brave looked like How to Train Your Dragon? I LOVE HTTYD, so I’m totally curious as to how they’re similar. :]

Great conceptual drawings btw. The coloring is gorgeous.

Cars 2 is pretty darn gorgeous and the 3D helps sell it even more. A little too kid oriented but fun and this time gets the franchise on par with something like A Bugs Life or Ratatoulie. The spy angle is a nice touch and gives some depth but I thought it was a bit trite and unoriginal.

As far as Brave, I have no real info other than the premise so I was only basing a comparison between it and HTTYD on that they’re both quasi medieval fantasy stories. Probably won’t bear much resemblance after a proper trailer hits but it just reminded me of how Pixar released Finding Nemo and Dreamworks released Shark Tale close to one another. But the only thing they really had in common was that each took place in the ocean:P

oh okay I gotcha 😉 Hehe, quasi medieval fantasy is my element. :]

About Cars 2- yeah, originally after watching some trailers I felt like the whole Cars deal was getting a little too big for it’s britches, ya know? But the animation is really, really great. :] It’ll be worth one watch, at least. Can’t wait to see it.
Haha, speaking of kid’s animation sequels, do you have any thoughts on Kung Fu Panda 2? I feel like the appeal for more of Po was something that Cars 2 doesn’t have– Lightning McQueen and the chubby panda aren’t exactly on the same plane…. and Po’s way funner, in my opinion. 😉 Have you seen Kung Fu Panda 2?

Nah, I missed it but being a fan of the first I’m eager to see it…possibly at a dollar theater if its already out of the mega theaters.

          • The Director

Aw, Kung Fu 2 should still be in, it only came out like last week or something.

Sorry, I should stop making conversation, I’m creating a mega thread here…. whoops 😛

Bring. it. on! This looks awesome and the fact that it’s Pixar’s first female protagonist gets lots of points from me. I LOVE the Scottish-ness of the story, look & feel, etc. as I’m a big fan of their culture. If only Sean Connery & Gerry Butler had been part of the voice cast, I’d buy a ticket to see Cars 2 just to see the teaser!!! 😀 😀

I put those concept art up a while ago, LOVE them!

Yeah I remember the concept stuff from a few months ago. The teaser makes the characters look oddly plastic but then again you only get a glimpse of Meridia in the teaser.

I can abide by the occasional Cars 2 if it means getting more inspired-sounding pictures like Brave. I remember getting excited about this movie back when it was called The Bear and the Bow; it’s a title I’ve been anticipating since ’09.

Seems like Pixar’s in a bit of a “one for us, one for them” loop wherein they make one movie to appease Disney and one to retain what makes Pixar such a knock-out studio.

    • MarcC

Wow 09 huh? That’s what I call holding a candle Andrew:) Did the same thing for The Expendables ever since it was first announced…but I have a feeling Brave will really be worth the wait!!

Me too but I’m curious to see what other characters will look like. Still , it won’t come out til next year so they can take their time unveiling stuff I guess:P
