Sweet (Announcement) Trailer…'Star Trek Into Darkness'

In case you weren’t aware, J.J. Abrams knocked his reboot of the Star Trek franchise out of the park. Suffice to say he had some mighty big expectations for a follow up. Admittedly a number of film fans (Star Trek or otherwise) weren’t too impressed with the poster that was released earlier this week, but have faith in that Bad Robot dear friends because this intro teaser trailer will blow you away with a capital Bwuuuuuum!

With Abrams again at the helm, he brings back he fantastic cast of the Starship Enterprise which includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho. So fire up this bad boy, fyi this sweet Japanese trailer has about 15 more seconds of footage, to full 1080p and get a taste of what’s in store for us next May.

Going a bit darker this time around, Abrams casts popular and talented Brit actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as the main villain…yeah, I think they got their money’s worth. Since this is just a announcement teaser there will be plenty more to see very very soon. In fact word is that, similar to Nolan’s The Dark Knight, we fans will be treated to an IMAX 3D prologue for this which will play before The Hobbit (Thanks to First Showing for the heads up). In case you missed it, here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek 2:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Paramount Pictures has slated Star Trek Into Darkness for wide release next Spring on May 17th, 2013. Wow, it already looks like this Abrams flick will be the one to beat, wouldn’t you say??

Wait, this was just the announcement trailer? That makes me feel a little bit more exhausted by this whole thing already.

Honestly, I don’t get the secrecy here. I’m well-convinced that Cumberbatch is playing Khan (though a rumor at the AICN talkbacks suggests that he’s playing eeeeeevil alternate timeline Picard, which I think would be amazing), and that sets much of the vague plot into better perspective. It’s a fine teaser, but enough with the hush-hush already!

Well that’s what they’re calling it. It looks like waaay more than an announcement but like a teaser should, it gets the job done. Really optimistic about this!

As much as I’d like to see Khan, I feel J.J. probably feels he should just let that stand on its own and bring a similar tone, but different villain to the sequel. Dan Mitchell is getting speculation as the heavy on other sites. I’m not a hardcore Trekkie so I have no idea who the hell that is.

I think J.J. has the originality, creative sense and latitude to do what he wants and not what the studio tells him to. So while the rumor mill and IMDb say Khan, the similarities may just be fans seeing what they want to see. Although if it does play out that way, I bet it won’t feel rehashed….like Nolan and The Joker.
