Sweet Trailer…'Iron Man 3'

Well, we all knew this was coming, so let’s skip the preamble shall we?

For my part, I’m tempering my reaction to this footage with caution. I’ve been burned before by great Iron Man trailers that failed to live up to their promise. Frankly, I don’t want to be in that position again, and so I’m taking the wary path. That said, there’s a lot in here that has piqued my curiosity and interest– namely Ben Kingsley’s voice and appearance as the Mandarin, and also the hint that he’ll actually represent such a real threat to Tony that the film will actually have stakes and tension. And of course there’s stuff that’s absolutely bereft of context, but I expect that from teaser footage and so I’m willing to look past it. (Though I’ve yet to reconcile the sheer number and variety of Iron Man suits. How many toys do they have to sell?)

Iron Man 3 opens on May 3, 2013. I’m not going to hype myself up for it– certainly not now– but this is a respectable preview, I think. What does this clip say to you about the film’s prospects?

Wow this looks serious. Hope Shane Black still manages to find time for wise-cracks!

Yeah, I think that’s going to be the direction Marvel’s next phase of films take. Darker and darker. Black being Black I’m sure we’ll get the sort of quippiness we’re accustomed to, but I expect all such punchlines will be tempered by the film’s grimmer heart.

I actually think the Marvel films could use a measure of darkness given how light they’ve been, but I have a feeling they’ll refrain from going Dark Knight-grim. That’s not really their brand.

Regardless, I’m interested, but I’ll keep my distance for the interim.

Certainly taking a huge cue from that film other film about a fallen billionaire who has to “rise”. So very interested to see what Black brings to this. KKBB is a gem so here’s hoping he and Downey can deliver a win again.
