    G-S-T Review…Calvary

John Michael McDonagh’s film Calvary is a deeply emotional and moral character study that asks a lot of the audience. McDonagh, through the central character Father James (played by Brendan Gleeson), asks how (and why) would you continue to help others if, ultimately, they can be no help to you, especially in time of need. Beyond that, Father James learns, in a confessional booth no less, that his life is about to expire. His end will not be the cause of old age, or poor health, but murder. He even knows who will pull the trigger in a week’s time and so the film tells the story of the things he…

Video Interview…’Calvary’ Writer/Director John Michael McDonagh

This week we got to speak with writer/director John Michael McDonagh about Fox Searchlight’s Calvary. It’s a fascinating character study and a pensive thriller that plays like a modernized Western. Essentially, as you’ll learn, McDonagh ripped off High Noon, but he does a wonderful job reworking the bones of the classic film to make this compelling story. It’s a complex film that is not only suspenseful, and at times oddly hilarious, but it raises questions about a multitude of universal themes and beliefs not limited to religion alone. Also, don’t  be fooled by the header image. He may look like the baddie in any number of Guy Richie movies but…

Sweet Trailer…Robert Redford's ‘The Company You Keep’

Last month we posted the first promo images from Robert Redford‘s upcoming film The Company You Keep. Well hot off Lawless (check out our review here) Shia LaBeouf may continue to impress us as a capable thespian and not be the man-faced boy running from autonomous robots. In the film, Jim Grant (Redford) is a widowed single father and attorney living in Albany who was once a member of the activist/terrorist organization “the Weather Underground”. Wanted for robbery and the murder of a security guard, Jim has been in hiding for more than thirty years. When another former Weatherman (Susan Sarandon) turns herself in to the FBI, aggressive young journalist Ben Shepard…

G-S-T Review…The Pirates! Band of Misfits

From Aardman and Sony Pictures Animation comes this delightful tale about the Pirate Captain and his rag tag bunch of buccaneers. Based on The Pirates! book series by Gideon Defoe, Band of Misfits is a clever, charming and hysterical adventure, very much in the spirit of Wallace and Grommit and Chicken Run and is directed by pioneer of the animation world and Aardman co-founder Peter Lord. Lord, takes his first directing job since his smash hit Chicken Run in 2000. Among the high caliber voice talent aboard are Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, David Tenant and more and add layers of depth to Lord’s latest stop-motion animated film. A wonderful blend of signature Aardman animation, wit and charm this is a return to…
