    Sweet Trailer…David O. Russell's 'American Hustle'

Ever since it was announced that awesome David O. Russell was working on not one but two more projects with both Bradley Cooper (with a ridiculously luxuriant perm) and Jennifer Lawrence (in what looks to be a smaller role) we couldn’t wait to hear more. Well today Columbia released the first American Hustle trailer and it is, to use some 70s vernacular, groovy…and a whole lot of other things. So take a gander and enjoy!! Directed by David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) American Hustle is, in short, is about the ABSCAM scandal. It’s a take on the true story of a notorious financial con-artist and his mistress/partner in crime (played…

David O. Russell to Direct Jennifer Lawrence In Two New Projects

When a filmmaker finds a talent he likes working with it can be, in the immortal words of Humphrey Bogart, “the beginning of a beautiful friendship“.  Well hot off the successful longevity that David O. Russell is seeing with his Silver Linings Playbook, he’s not done with Jennifer Lawrence, not by a long shot. As such the filmmaker is looking to work with the white-hot actress for two more pictures. He and Lawrence will be re-collaborating on his next two features. The first is a yet-untitled dark comedy, formerly known as American Bullshit, about the ABSCAM scandal. It’s a true story of a notorious financial con-artist and his mistress/partner in crime (played respectively…

    G-S-T Year in Review – Andrew’s 2012 Wrap Up

I’m willing to admit that last year, I talked 2011 a bit more than necessary. Not that my feelings on the year were dishonest; contrary to many, I thought well of 2011, a year that didn’t contain a plethora of lasting classics but still offered a lot of excellent cinema for our viewing pleasure. But to call it a “great” year may have been a stretch, and I’m willing to admit that now in light of the fact that 2012 has, in fact, been a great year. How can you trust me on this one? Simple: I’ve written my top ten list, re-written it, scrapped that, started over from the…

    G-S-T Top 10 – Movies Off The Beaten Path – Round 4

After a two-month hiatus, we’re back with the next installment of “Movies off the Beaten Path”. Movies, and the entertainment business, can be highly hit or miss because of ranging tastes in film and how people approach the medium. Sometimes, for whatever reason, you hear about a movie and have no desire to see it and don’t. You may even avoid it at all costs. In other cases you have no idea the film exists until someone points it out to you, years after its original release. The following entries in our series of Top 10 lists are films I happened to stumble upon or that were recommended to me. Whether…

The Hollywood Reporter's Roundtable Series: Directors

Every year, just before Oscar season kicks into gear, The Hollywood Reporter holds their insightful series of hour-long roundtables. Last week THR released their session with the leading ladies expected to make waves this year and now the Directors are having their cordial chat round the table. This year’s crop is quite impressive and the 6 personalities are as entertaining and insightful as the are varied. As usual it’s 60 minutes so don’t let me keep you any longer. Plug in some headphones and fire this bad boy up… Ang Lee (Life of Pi), David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), Ben Affleck (Argo), Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained), Gus Van Sant (Promised Land), and Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) all give some great answers to…

    G-S-T Review…Silver Linings Playbook

The most startling thing about Silver Linings Playbook is its complete embrace of being unhinged. A film that revolves around mental health issues should feel unpredictable, even if people stubbornly want to shoehorn the film into the romantic comedy genre. Let me be clear here, then, that I never felt Silver Linings fell into that genre. In fact, it doesn’t play fair. This isn’t a neat film. When Jennifer Lawrence’s Tiffany is introduced to Bradley Cooper’s Pat, we see his gaze drift to her breasts ever so casually. When he looks up, we see recognition in her eyes. She doesn’t admonish him there, but later we understand this attention isn’t uncommon for her nor unwanted. Which is…

Interview…’Silver Linings Playbook’ Writer Matthew Quick

David O. Russell‘s vivacious new film, Silver Linings Playbook, is perhaps his best yet. While being full of charm and humor, it also has something to say about how fragile the mind is and what this world can do to someone on the brink. Bolstered by a barrier-breaking performance by Jennifer Lawrence and a surprisingly great turn by Bradley Cooper, the film will both shock and bewitch you. A lot of what Russell displays on the screen, however, is drawn from the novel of the same name by writer Matthew Quick, who was gracious enough to recently sit down with me to discuss the mixed emotions of watching his book on screen, his thoughts on…

    Sweet Trailer…'The Fighter'

Was going through the hot sheets (read: Sites We Like) and came across this trailer. Frankly I had forgotten about it but now I’m glad that it’s back on my radar. The bizarre teaming of Christian Bale (in another shocking change in his physical appearance) and Mark Wahlberg (of all people right?) seem to have an intersting chemistry for their upcoming film The Fighter. We had written about this last year and I’m actually quite eager to see this. Have a look at the trailer and let me know what you think… The latest effort from David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) tells the true tale of Mickey Ward…
