Sweet Trailers…'The Wolverine' Gets A Domestic and An International Trailer

I’ll come right out and say it. The Wolverine is hands down the coolest X-Men of them all (we at GST don’t think it’s open to debate but you can certainly make your case in the comments below). But let’s face it, the last outing with Logan, make that the last two outings were awful movies and simply not what we as fans deserved. So with two strikes against the studio, James Mangold stepped to the plate and has been hard at work crafting the latest, hopefully redeeming adventure about our beloved adamantium enhanced amnesiac. So far everything we’ve seen from the Mangold camp looked good. Too good in fact and…

Hugh Goes High-Res in 'Wolverine' Image

This is exactly what it sounds like: a high-resolution photograph of Hugh “Heard the People Sing” Jackman from Darren Aronofsky’s James Mangold’s upcoming The Wolverine, a sequel/reboot/rebootquel/one-off for the eponymous beloved superhero after 2008’s disastrous Wolverine: Origins. Naturally, there’s not a whole lot to say about the shot– Jackman looks like he’s ready to tear off some heads after serenading audiences in Les Misérables, and I suspect for many that seeing Jackman in fighting shape will represent a huge chunk of the picture’s fan allure. If anything, it should be refreshing to see Logan go toe-to-toe with samurai and ninjas instead of yet another super-mutant heavy designed to make us…

    G-S-T Review…Les Misérables

There’s little use in trying to disguise my frustration with Tom Hooper’s sluggish interpretation of Les Misérables, though in the interest of full disclosure I should acknowledge immediately that I have never seen the musical on which it is based. (And it’s been years since I read Victor Hugo’s original novel.) Put another way, I have no personal ideal of what Les Mis should be, so as far as it concerned me, Hooper– who successfully directed a strong cast of performers to Oscar gold two years ago with The King’s Speech— had the floor here. A shame, then, that he squanders the opportunity by muting his strengths as a filmmaker…

    G-S-T Review…Rise of the Guardians

Thinking about Rise of the Guardians, Dreamworks’ latest offering, I can’t say for sure whether Pete Ramsey mixed a heart-warming, energetic childrens’ film with a story of secular subversion or vice versa. Most likely, it’s the former; there’s little doubting that Rise of the Guardians exists first and foremost to entertain and dazzle theaters full of tykes and adults alike with impressive panache. In that respect, the film succeeds in overwhelming fashion, boasting a bright, colorful visual palette and a much-improved style of animation while giving its world life through excellent voice casting. (If, of course, your concept of Santa Claus involves Jack Donaghy’s Russian half-brother.) Put simply, there’s no denying that the…

    G-S-T Review…Butter

You can’t go anywhere today without being inundated with technology.  Children today have greater technological advancements at their fingertips than NASA had when it launched its first rocket.  Every facet of our lives has been influenced by technology and movies are no exception.  Movies now benefit from realistic CG and incredible graphics.  The time it takes for a movie to go from script to screen is now measured in a matter of weeks rather than months.  All that being said, it’s nice to take a step back occasionally and watch a film that does not rely heavily upon computer-generated material.  Butter is just such a film. In a small town…

Ohhh, Look…Extended First Look At Les Misérables

I know many of us were prepared to accept that Lincoln would dominate come awards time, but we made an oversight: we didn’t let Tom Hooper speak his piece. And now he has. Today, Universal Pictures has released a four minute clip of behind the scenes footage from Hooper’s upcoming adaptation of legendary musical Les Misérables (via Regal Cinemas’ Youtube channel). Put simply, the production looks and sounds spectacular, but watch the clip below yourself and see what you think: The foremost element of the clip is the heavy focus on the live singing, which makes sense. Eschewing prerecorded tracks in favor of letting the cast belt out their own…

    G-S-T Review…Real Steel

Real Steel, simply put, is tons of fun. There’s decidedly more substance here than in the brainless rock ’em sock ’em excitement of this year’s Transformers 3. The distinction here is that Real Steel has the benefit of having significant human drama to compliment the grandeur and action on screen and that makes this story work. Moreover, it is funny, endearing, inspirational and better crafted than you might expect. That said, as this is the story of an unlikely hero it’s perfectly appropriate that Shawn Levy, a bit of an underdog himself, can bring us something fun and exciting to cheer for with lots of heart…and with robots no less.
