    G-S-T Review…Brave

Stories of fantasy and high adventure are certain to contain genre stand-bys like magic, kingdoms a far, fair maidens and the like. Yet in Pixar’s latest (and first true period-piece) this “maiden” is not a damsel in distress by any means. Brave‘s Princess Merida actually has more in common with any number of Hayao Miyazaki’s female protagonists than it does the colorful princesses whose posters grace little girls’ walls. It channels some of the more stand-up kind of womanly characters we’ve seen in the last few decades…even if in this case she is defiant to a fault. With a line like “I am Merida, and I’ll be shooting for my own hand”…

Remember that charming little animated film from Pete Docter all the way back in 2001? You know, the one with the adorable characters hiding in closets to scare kids? Yeah, thought that might ring a bell. Well, for those of you who fell in love with the likes of Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan (“Sulley” for short) Pixar’s next film will take us back to the duo’s college days before they were best friends. So enjoy this glimpse into how these two suffered some knocks (well mostly Mike) became the best of pals with the first teaser trailer to the Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University… By the way, in a crafty…

Ohhh, Look…First Look At 'Wreck-It Ralph' Characters – UPDATED

Last week we got a look at Ralph, from Pixar’s upcoming Wreck-It Ralph. It wasn’t much but it did have that old school, side-of-an-arcade-game look/feel to it. But this morning, USA Today has 4 exclusive images from the feature. In the film about a vintage 8-bit brute, Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) has been bashing buildings for 30 years as the well-mannered hero Fix-It Felix, Jr. (30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer) has constantly repaired all his demolition handiwork. Ralph decides he no longer wants to be the “bad guy”, but in his attempts to change his ways he unleashes a deadly enemy who threatens to destroy every game in the arcade. Behold, some…

    Ohhh, Look…'Wreck-It Ralph' Character Images

This goes out to all you Pixar fans and 8-bit junkies. In case you haven’t heard, the gang at Pixar has come up with a pretty awesome sounding idea for a film called Wreck -It Ralph. Disney announced this project last August at the D23 Expo along with a string of titles. Most of those mentioned have already hit theaters but this has been one that we at G-S-T have been the most excited about. In the film, the main character Ralph decides he no longer wants to be the “bad guy”, and ventures into other games in hopes of becoming a “hero”. See? Told you it sounded awesome! While many film fans…

With the summer movie season heating up, four popular Disney•Pixar movies are returning exclusively to AMC Theatres for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. From May 25 through May 28, Toy Story 3, Ratatouille, Up and WALL•E will be featured at AMC locations around the country. Theater goers will get a special treat for coming out to the cinema. Each film will be accompanied by a classic Pixar short film and an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming movie, Brave. Sounds good to me! “There are some great films coming out Memorial Day weekend but nothing specifically for families and young children,” said Sun Dee Larson, vice president of Film Marketing at AMC. “We’re…

Exclusive: Video Interview…Film Composer Michael Giacchino

To close out their Masters of Film Music series, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra has invited Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (pronounced “Juh-keen-oh“) to conduct a retrospective concert from May 18th – 20th. The set list, which he’s calling Stories of Islands, Balloons and Space, will include a number of his most popular and well-loved themes/music including Lost, Up, Star Trek, Super 8 and Ratatoulie. While he’s garnered plenty of acclaim and accolades this will be one of the few time he’s ever conducted his work. But before he takes the stage for his 3 night engagement (the first time that an orchestra in the United States has performed a complete range of his work), he agreed to meet with G-S-T for an exclusive interview. Join…

    Exclusive: Interview…Film Composer Michael Giacchino

This week, Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (Star Trek, Super 8, Up, The Incredibles) will hold an exclusive 3 night engagement with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The retrospective concert experience will feature a set list of Giacchino’s finest works with an added bonus; Michael himself will be conducting his well-loved themes at the Meyerson Symphony Center from May 18th – 20th. In a very fun and informative interview from his office at Pixar, Go,See,Talk got to speak with Michael to discuss his influences, his passion, his process and how he weaves his musical magic. 20 minutes is nowhere near long enough to spend with this gifted musician (honestly I have pages of things I wanted to ask him), so before our on-camera session with him…

Ohhh, Look…First Two & A Half Minutes of Pixar Epic ‘Brave’

Seems more and more movies are releasing a “sneak peek” like this to pique interests. That’s fine with me and in a way I prefer over a cherry picked or misleading trailer. So for those eager to see Pixar’s first epic/period piece film Brave, feast your eyes on the first two and a half minutes… Kelly Macdonald stars as Merida and leads an impressive cast inlcuding Billy Connolly (The Boondock Saints), Emma Thompson (Love Actually), Robbie Coltrane (the Harry Potter series) and Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy). Disney has slated Brave for release this Summer on June 22nd, 2012. And in case you missed it yesterday, here is the second, might I add very vibrant, theatrical poster for Brave. I can’t wait!! I…

    Sweet Trailer…'Brave'

Brave tells the tale of  Scottish Princess Merida, an unruly daughter of royal nobility who is not content living by her family’s rules (sound like any other Disney Pricesses we know??). Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. Going in the “way back machine” this excitingly looks in the same vein of the other recent and fun medieval stories like Legend of The Guardians or How To Train Your Dragon and that’s got my fires stoked! For those of you who were on board for the teaser trailer back in June behold, the full length trailer…now with more Scottish accents. Enjoy! Originally Brave was to be directed…

    Off the Shelf…’Cars 2′

In a case of mistaken identity, similar to The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lightning McQueen’s affably oblivious best friend Mater is swept up in a dastardly and ingenious plot that would make Ian Fleming smile. John Lasseter has a fondness for spy films (as described in his very informative commentary with co-director Brad Lewis). He and his whole family are huge fans of the Bourne series so he felt making Cars 2 a throwback spy film was the best way to approach this sequel. There are lots of amazing sequences and intriguing plot devices that make this like 007-lite as secret weapons, mysterious villains and action packed sequences abounded. However, like any kid who takes all their toys out and plays with them at once there’s a…

John Lasseter To Get Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame – UPDATED

John Lasseter, creative genius and one of the co-founders of Pixar, will very soon get his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The brilliant mind behind nearly all of Pixar’s hits will be honored next Tuesday morning in front of the famous El Capitan Theatre (6834 Hollywood Boulevard to you locals) where John will receive the 2,453th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Category of Motion Pictures. This event will be in conjunction with the DVD/Blu Ray release of Cars 2 and it should be a fantastic tribute to such a master of the imagination. For those of you in the area it might not be…
