Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox are bringing Chris Wedge’s EPIC to theaters this weekend. It’s a visual wonderland that is perfectly complimented by Danny Elfman’s beautiful score. So it was with that in mind we decided to look at a variety of beloved films that feature equally gorgeous animation and take us to worlds too incredible to believe. Yet while the four titles above are vastly different at first glance they do share one common element; a standout musical score that is as vibrant as any hand-painted or computer generated cells in each of these fantastic stories. FourScore Match-Up #7: "Batteries Not Included"
Today we’ve got robots, robots everywhere; good, bad, big, small, made of new parts and spare parts. Each film features four equally impressive scores about peace, love, family and even all out war. Quite a mixed bag of bolts, wouldn’t you say? In true Rock’em Sock’em format we pit these big guys (and not so big guys) up against one another. Leave it to great composers to craft such amazing scores to make you feel emotional for walking trash cans. So which of these can take a licking and keep on ticking?? Off the Shelf…'The Island'
From the successful multi-blog event headed up by Fandango Groovers, I have found that one of the participants has a similar quasi-fondness for this film. That said, I figured this was the perfect inspiration to take yet another look at the film and re-evaluate it. Now everyone knows that Michael Bay has been accused of over-the-top action and effects. Further, his films are replete with some stupid dialog/sequences and hot actresses but he just keeps making them. But above all, they’re popcorn films and I actually enjoy a handful of them. To me, no other film on his resume screams “over-the-top” than his futuristic flick The Island (yes even more so than Transformers).
