    G-S-T Review…Solo: A Star Wars Story

A long time ago, as the story goes, there was a scruffy-looking space smuggler. Well, this story is about that beloved scoundrel, only younger and he had yet to herd nerfs. So goes Solo: A Star Wars Story. Aside from being a film people may have wanted (but audiences didn’t need), you might have heard stories about directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller leaving the project (from a script by Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan) and Ron Howard coming aboard. Yup, creative changes certainly abound when putting together a Star Wars story these days. The good news is that the film is steeped in reverence, and a lot of fun. And more…

    G-S-T Review…Out of the Furnace

You can take the Oscar bait out of the gritty revenge thriller, but you can’t take the gritty revenge thriller out of the Oscar bait. So goes Out of the Furnace, Scott Cooper’s latest film since 2009’s deplorably hackneyed Crazy Heart; in just under two hours of running time, Cooper never makes the effort to determine  whether he’s making a sweeping, important piece of arthouse cinema, or a good old fashioned genre picture. Truthfully, that’s by design – he’s very clearly bent on mashing these two pursuits together from the very start, hoping that by adding two and two he’ll come out the other side with a handsome bit of…

G-S-T Review…The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Here we are with the second installment in the trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. This trilogy (well, three novels stretched out to four films) is the latest in the teen craze following on the heels of Harry Potter and Twilight and now The Hunger Games is taking its turn in the spotlight. Even with all of the success that the first movie saw, the studio was still not happy. New writers and a new director took the helm for this installment, but does that put the odds in the production’s favor and help take the series to the next level? In short, yes, in fact, with three fingers thrust…

    G-S-T Review…Now You See Me

Louis Leterrier. That name means different things to different people. But when telling a tale that’s a quasi-magical, quasi-heist film, he seems the perfect fit for this type of story. None of his films are known to contain very much substance, yet, on a cursory level, they are comprised of mostly breezy entertainment with a strong, and slightly fun visual sense. Smoke, mirrors, and misdirection are the tools of a magician and Leterrier works in the same medium, one where everything is an illusion; a hollow one with no great revelation behind the curtain, only disappointment. That sounds incredibly harsh as Now You See Me, for most of the duration at least, is…

Sweet Trailer…Jesse Eisenberg's Ensemble Heist Flick 'Now You See Me'

Yesterday The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 opened across the nation and one of the surprises (beyond the 15 minute melee in the finale), which funny enough had nothing to do with Twilight, came in the form of a trailer. The trailer in question was for the upcoming Jesse Eisenberg vehicle Now You See Me. What looks equal parts intriguing, comical and roller coaster-type fun, Summit Entertainment will unveil the illusionist heist flick Now You See Me next year and I bet it’ll be one helluva Summer popcorn film. This didn’t sound too impressive when it was announced some months ago but this stellar trailer (and cast!) has me singing a different…
