Sweet Trailer…Tom Hanks in ‘News of the World’

Seems that even in a pandemic, you can’t keep a good Hanks down. First of all, he and his wife Rita beat the Coronavirus. And shortly after that, his WWII actioner, Greyhound, was released in early Summer. And for his third feat of 2020, he headlines a moving period-piece, set in the plains of Texas, about a war veteran helping return a young girl to her family. Paul Greengrass’ new film – a Western written and directed by Greengrass (based upon the novel by Paulette Jiles) – finds him reuniting with his star from their 2013 Best Picture nominee Captain Phillips. Looks like another winning project for the both of…

    G-S-T Review…Saving Mr. Banks

A spoonful of sugar, as they say, helps the medicine go down. In the case of Saving Mr. Banks, John Lee Hancock needn’t any help coaxing people to eat up his charming quasi-biopic. But still, that idea of needing something to sort of grease the rails to get a job done really captures the spirit and the idea of the entire film itself and does make the film so much more palatable. On the surface it’s fun to see the crotchety British writer thumb her nose at Disney’s candy-coated empire, but there’s so much more to it than that. Now Saving Mr. Banks, despite the appeal and allure of one Walt…

Ohhh, Look…Three 'Saving Mr. Banks' Featurettes

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise – one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt faced the curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who had absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stopped selling and money grew short, Travers reluctantly agreed to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation. For two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulled out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs…

    G-S-T Review…Captain Phillips

Paul Greengrass is known for making some rather hard-hitting films. Regardless of whether those hits land physically (see: his Bourne films) or emotionally (see: United 93) he’s a no nonsense director who tells taut and weighty white-knuckle tales about survival and the potential power of the human spirit. His latest effort Captain Phillips, the adaptation of the autobiographical novel “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea” written by the actual Captain Richard Phillips is, in short, a tense and involving kidnapping movie. In a way it is very much the maritime counterpart to United 93 which makes Greengrass the right man for the job. We live in a…
