Interview…Lawrence Loh on Conducting ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ and Other Films In Concert

In advance of the live-to-picture performances of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra this month, Lawrence Loh sat with us to discuss his career, the nuances of conducting as well as his recent appointment to Music Director of the Waco Symphony Orchestra.

Those of you North Texas symphony fans and concert goers will likely have seen Lawrence at numerous events (like the Christmas Pops) as Associate Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra where he has delighted audiences for years.

As a self-described “Star Wars geek” and film music enthusiast, Loh has conducted numerous sold-out John Williams and film music tribute concerts. This month’s program at the DSO is Williams by way of Scotland as Patrick Doyle’s work on the Mike Newell-directed film ranks as one of the best in the series.

Part of Loh’s appeal is his ability to serve as both host and conductor. He’s even assisted maestro Williams on multiple occasions and has worked with a wide range of pops artists from Chris Botti and Ann Hampton Callaway to Jason Alexander and Idina Menzel. As one of the most requested conductors for conducting Films in Concert, Loh has led Black Panther, Star Wars (Episodes 4-6), Jaws, Nightmare Before Christmas, Jurassic Park, Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ in the Rain, among other film productions.

The live-to-picture event runs from August 29 through September 1 only at the DSO. Get your tickets to this performance and others from the official website of the Dallas Symphony. But until then, enjoy our session with Lawrence as we talk batons, strings, wizards and more!
