The iconic pairing of Cheech & Chong has been a massive hit with audiences for more than 50 years, and the legendary stoners have gotten back together for a highly entertaining, tell-all documentary. From director/producer David Bushell comes a surprising and hilarious trip down memory lane that, like the two subjects, is anything but conventional.
We got to speak with Bushell about his process. As this was very much a passion project and a dream opportunity, this director’s primary focus was, and I quote, “not to fuck this up.”
Further, Bushell tells us that this documentary – replete with fourth wall breaking exposition, throwback animation, thirty hours of interviews, archival footage and photos and more – was like “lighting pack of firecrackers and running.”
In many respects, as Bushell shows in this doc, they’re very much like a married couple. It’s not always rainbows and nice dreams, but there sure is a lot of fun. Grab a bud and enjoy this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience!
Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie defies documentary expectations, offering a wildly imaginative take on genre convention; a true-life tale told through a mix of animation and archival madness, all underscored by a classic cinematic road trip comedy. Tracing the enduring legacy of pioneering comics Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the film features interviews, sketches, and never-before-seen footage spanning the duo’s five-decade career. The result is an unlikely story of friendship and fame, turmoil and defiance, rebellion and ultimately – redemption.
