John McPhail is an award-winning writer and director known for crafting bold, heartfelt, and hilarious stories that connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level. A firm believer that laughter and tears go hand in hand, he specializes in high-concept comedies that balance absurdity with genuine heart.
A lifelong horror fan raised on a steady diet of John Carpenter and Stephen King, John has a deep love for genre storytelling, often fusing horror, comedy, and heartfelt drama in unexpected ways. His films thrive on contrast, the ridiculous and the real, the hilarious and the heartbreaking because, as he sees it, the best way to make someone laugh is to first make them care.
His work continues to push the boundaries of genre, always with an eye toward creating films that bring people together, laughing, crying, and experiencing something unforgettable. John stands out as a filmmaker with a knack for creating big, fun worlds filled with grounded, lovable characters.
Growing up in a working-class family, John’s love of cinema was forged in the glow of Friday night video rentals, where each film was an event, a shared experience that brought his family together. That sense of communal joy continues to fuel his work, with his latest feature, Grow, embodying everything he loves about storytelling: comedy, warmth, and a touch of magic. A family film designed to bring audiences together, this is a film he proudly calls his best work to date.
We had a lot of laughs chatting with John, and you can tell by his sparkling personality how much he cares about his work. And it’s so infectious you can easily imagine how he can inspire people on set. Just ask any of his cast…like Ella Hunt. So, as the world gets closer to the holiday season, Grow is something that will surprise, entertain and delight families for years to come. Enjoy this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podast Experience!

Grow is a heartwarming (and slightly chaotic) tale of pumpkins, sabotage, and unexpected family ties. When a tough-as-nails farmer takes in her rebellious niece, Charlie, she doesn’t expect her to shake up the town – or enter the fiercely competitive local pumpkin contest. But with a genetically engineered super-pumpkin, shady sabotage, and a town full of eccentric growers, Charlie’s got her work cut out for her. As she raises her pumpkin “Peter” from seed to superstar, she might just grow something even bigger: a new life, a community…and maybe a little love.
Directed by John McPhail and written by Nick Guthe, Christos N. Gage & Ruth Fletcher Gage, the film stars Nick Frost, Golda Rosheuval, Jane Horrocks, Jeremy Swift, Tim McInnerny, Dominic MacLaughlin, and Joe Wilkinson.
The Sky Original film is coming to cinemas on October 17. Trust us, it’ll grow on ya!
