There’s something almost mythical about Florida. Whether that ties to the history of the unmistakable peninsula, the myriad of demographics who call it home or, like Huey Lewis says about New York, “Where else can you do a half a million things, all at a quarter to three?” Well, you can probably do a lot more in Florida which is why it has such an odd draw.
So, if you’re going to tell a story about a man who finds and falls in love with a mermaid, where better to set this unconventional tail, er, tale? As you might expect from the outrageous premise, Mermaid is weird, wild, funny and ferocious. This action horror comedy thriller is buckets of fun that really encapsulates the bizarre nature of the Sunshine state. In a word, it’s Florida, man. Hmm, I guess that’s three words. All things aside, the legitimacy of the cinematography, the makeup effects and other elements in Tyler Cornrack‘s make this his love letter to the underbelly of gator country.
To help run this highly fictional yarn ashore, he’s cast the likes of Robert Patrick, Kirk Fox and others to make this feel grounded and, at times, dangerous. Rounding out the ensemble is Kevin ‘the real deal‘ Dunn. He’s long been our favorite character actor, and totally steals this movie. We were thrilled to get to talk to him about what might be his best supporting role to date. So, let’s dive in.
