Emotion comes in all forms, and when music is doing what it does best, it can really move you. Even the most obscure sound palette canstart the water works. As DC Studios’ Lanterns is not your typical detective procedural, the sound needed to take a similarly unconventional approach. Spoiler: it was the right choice.
Stephanie Economou has had her fair share of exciting projects, and ones where adventure and danger abound. The approach on the show is different, speaking much more to the kind of music she is, as dives into some ‘90s and ‘00s era guitar rock and the driving bass riffs literally propel the story and characters.
Her skill and masterful instrument selection gives this show a techie grungy western feel. While that description probably doesn’t make sense, once you hear those driving notes, it all makes sense. Further, while Hal and John are opposites whose themes are composed to reflect that, they do share a common language and they both work together. It’s a fine addition to the show, and refreshing in that Economou really got to make this her own and was encouraged to try things without any guard rails or reservations.
