Universal will mark its 100th anniversary in 2012, and will commemorate its centennial with a yearlong celebration honoring the studio’s rich film history and cultural legacy. The campaign draws its inspiration from Universal’s extraordinary and diverse library of films, many of which will be highlighted throughout the year, and is designed to engage fans of all ages in the art of moviemaking. Dallas Symphony Hosts “Masters of Film Music” with James Newton Howard
James Newton Howard’s diverse and expansive musical resume has taken audiences from the stone age to outer space and from the depths of the earth to the top of the Empire State Building. This week, Oscar-nominated composer James Newton Howard will be coming to Dallas to play a very limited engagement with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This special 2 night event will feature Howard playing a number of his most famous themes at the Meyerson Symphony Center from January 13th -14th. In celebration of his upcoming performance, we at G-S-T want to take a brief look back at the amazing career of one of the finest working composers in the film world.

G-S-T Review….Pariah
Pariah is the feature length adaptation of Dee Rees’ semi-autobiographical short of the same name. A bold and honest film that wears its heart on its sleeve, Pariah makes no pretense and only asks the viewer to accept it as openly as the story is being told. The first time writer/director shares some of her own experiences with a fair amount of fiction and the result proves to be one of the most genuine and inspiring films of 2011.

Sweet Trailer…'ATM'
From IFC Midnight comes a psychological thriller about three co-workers who get trapped in an ATM booth. Not that they’re locked in (not at first), they just can’t leave because there’s a menacing man outside. Dun, dun, dun. No, really, it does look better than you’d expect. Name any film based primarily in one location (Frozen, Wrecked, P2, Phone booth, even Castaway) and they work because they all play on that fear of isolation and, among other things, impending death. ATM takes that formula and adds in a dash of silent stalker just for fun. Hey, he does a good job of channeling Michael Meyers. Have a look… Not bad right?…

Thomas Newman Steps In To Score Sam Mendes' Bond Film 'Skyfall'
After composer David Arnold’s five film run scoring Bond films, Oscar-nominee Thomas Newman will now be stepping in to lend his musical genius to the newest Bond adventure Skyfall. That sounds like great news to me, but he might not ring a bell with you at home so here’s a few titles you might recall. Those of you Pixar fans will recognize his work from Finding Nemo and Wall-E. He’s also had his share of weighty and dramatic period pieces with Revolutionary Road, Cinderella Man and The Help. His scores are always highly emotional and pensive but how will that translate to the high octane world of MI 6’s most famous 00 agent? Guess we’ll find out…

Martin Scorsese To Be Honored with BAFTA Fellowship
We are very close to award season and this year all the ceremonies will be celebrating the best of what 2011 had to offer. As is always the case, certain award shows will honor something not just from the past year but call attention to a significant body of work. The artist/filmmaker that will be honored at this year’s Orange BAFTA awards is legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. With this Academy Fellowship honor, he will join the join a select number of outstanding film personalities and can be rightfully recognized as one of the most elite in the business. Nothing less than the best for one of film’s pioneering visionaries right?
