Well now, things are starting to look just a little bit better for Maleficent. That’s a good thing because for a while now we film fans have been getting gritty big-budget versions of popular fairy tales…with mixed results. On paper it seemed like a winning formula too. “Go dark.” they said. “Go gritty, it worked for Batman!” To which we clamored “Ohh, brooding!”. Well Snow White and the Huntsman was one of the more recent highly anticipated (and dark) features but is was also spectacularly boring and a huge let down. So when it was announced that the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty would be the next property to get a…

G-S-T Trailer Round Up: Sundance, Spartans, Sam Rockwell and Aussie Horror
Whether you are living the sweet life at the Sundance Film Festival or like the rest of us have day jobs and are living vicariously through critic’s tweets, January is a busy movie month. Not really for quality cinema per se but advetising of forthcoming titles as it, by way of the festival circuit and Super Bowl commercials, allows us a chance to look ahead to films just over the horizon. Things you hadn’t expected or heard of may now start popping up all over your radar. Lots of trailers hit the web this week (some immediately following purchase and plans for distribution while at Sundance) and so this catch-all…

Ho-Hum Trailer…Angelina Jolie In ‘Maleficent’
In the upcoming film Maleficent The Walt Disney company is turning back the pages in their catalog to cast some light on one of their most popular, and apparently unexplored characters. Seemingly cast to perfection with Angelina Jolie this new film tells yet another untold tale of how an evil character came to be so, well, evil. Now it looks all kinds of pretty, chock full of that Disney-stylized whimsical magic, and it has an alluring factor that may or may not be completely attributed to a nostalgic factor (compounded by the shot-for-shot comparison scenes from the classic animated film) but we’ve been fooled before. Have a peek at the glitzy and…

Sweet Trailer…’How To Train Your Dragon 2′
One of the biggest (and unexpected) hits in the DreamWorks Animation catalog is their medieval adventure story How To Train Your Dragon. Delightful, fanciful, funny and heartwarming that story, about a boy and his dragon, just keeps giving and giving and now, best of all, DreamWorks Animation is giving us a sequel. The trailer for this follow-up to the 2010 film just hit and it looks like more high-flying fun. It features the return of the original cast as well as that patented DreamWorks charm. Enjoy! It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest…

Sweet Trailer…’Jupiter Ascending’
Whether you understand them or not, the Wachowskis play by their own rules and push cinematic boundaries with every singe frame. The Matrix wowed the sci-fi/action world, Speed Racer wowed anime fans almost exclusively, Cloud Atlas wowed half of those who saw it (the other half is still trying to figure out what they saw) and their latest film looks to again cater to a special breed of film fan. Expect this to be just as groundbreaking and ambitious but for now let’s just get to the good stuff…check out the first sweet looking trailer for Jupiter Ascending below. Jupiter Ascending is an intergalactic epic in which humans are near…

Sweet Trailer…’The Amazing Spider-Man 2′
Last year Marc Webb successfully righted the Spider-Man franchise after Sony and Sam Raimi sorely parted ways. Webb’s film, the first in a rebooted series, won critics and audiences over and with a healthy ROI a sequel was green-lit before you could say “thwip”. But this? Who saw this coming. Count the baddies…there are not one, not two, not even three villains but four (when you count Dr. Conners who is still in prison) sinister foes for Peter to possibly contend with (and really, there’s a baker’s half a dozen to those of you who picked up on the subtle foreshadowing teased in the trailer)!! Didn’t Sony learn that too may cooks in…

Sweet Trailer…'Sabotage'
After two rather luke-warm receptions at the box office (well we quite liked The Last Stand) Arnold Schwarzenegger is back for his third full headlining post-Governator outing and man does this high-octane shoot-em-up look to finally deliver the goods. Originally titled “Ten”, David Ayer’s action thriller Sabotage puts an macho spin on Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians as it as follows an elite DEA task force who are taken out, one at a time, after they successfully rip off a drug cartel safe house. Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch) and written by Skip Woods, Schwarzenegger leads this elite task force that goes after the world’s deadliest drug cartels.…

Sweet Trailer…Hayao Miyazaki's 'The Wind Rises'
Legendary animator and founder of the world-renowned Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki announced earlier this year that he is finally, yes finally going to retire. He tried before, twice but now it’s official. His final animated film is called The Wind Rises and is about Jirō Horikoshi, the designer of Japan’s famous Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane. The film made the festival rounds and if you missed it you’ll have to wait until next year to catch it. But Ghibli films are worth the wait…even if they are dubbed. So for those of you who have been looking forward to anything and everything from the house that Hayao built enjoy this…
