I so hate to say this but there are some movies on my Sacred Shelves that just don’t inspire, excite, or entertain me anymore. No it’s not because I have grown up, or I think these are sub par films (well a few could be called “guilty pleasures”). Although I’m incredibly fond of these films, I have just seen them too many times and I mean too many. If I find that I can’t sleep I’ll actually put one of these on and it’ll be fast asleep in no time. Most film fans know their collection backwards and forwards. They can play the entire movie their head and quote dialog all the live…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Favorite Costumed Performances
One of the most interesting things about a movie is when an actor dresses up in make-up or a costume and (when done well) there is a transformation to this character that is compelling and riveting. Below is a list I’ve compiled for 5 (not the greatest ever mind you but) very, very fine performances. These gifted actors just shine right through all the make up and flat-out impress the hell out me. I believe these actors deserve as much credit and praise as possible for their work in, what I believe to be, truly impressive and noteworthy turns…

G-S-T Top 10 – Favorite EPIC Films (Part I)
I’ll say right off that this list probably won’t contain many of the films that you’d expect to see when I put EPIC in the title. When I come up with a Quick 5 or a Top 10, I usually try to choose films that are either off the beaten path or ones that just don’t get enough attention. Hey, it’s what I do. So before we start, let’s just take a look at this blurb which helps define and identify the makings of an epic. I think this is important as most people (mainly the ones I know) think an epic is simply a “sword and sandal” film. As written below,…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Great Filmmakers Who Began in Horror
I’m no film historian but I have noticed something consistent in the films I’ve seen. While there’s no surefire formula for success in Hollywood, it’s a good bet that if you want to make it big, you have to start in horror. Now many people may not enjoy horror films but there are a number of uberly talented people working with buckets of blood, fake limbs and scary power tools. In many cases, those productions could just be their ticket to the big leagues. One day, I’d bet, we might just see one of those unknown, unsuspecting directors walking across the stage at Oscar night for something they’ll do later on…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Great Films That Leave You Feeling Bad
It’s funny how some films out there can be really, really great but leave you feeling really, really bad afterwards. Further there are some rather depressing films you probably wish you could “un-see”. Listed below are 5 films which are really in the upper echelon in terms of story, character development, pace, mood, etc. While these films won’t do much for your mood afterwards, we believe these to be truly fantastic pieces of art. These films are created with expert hands and are feats in and of themselves. However the intent of the story is to get under your skin and (to properly tell the story) to leave you heartbroken, in tears, nauseous…or…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Best Action Melee Scenes
Let’s face it, when we walk into an action movie, we don’t want realism. We want our hero to be “10 feet tall and bulletproof“. We want him/her to know tons of bone crunching self-defense, walk through a battle unscathed and maybe, just maybe, if we’ve suspended all our disbelief, our hero will be able to walk on water. Now as action films go, pushing the envelope is a requirement, nay, obligation and most times, despite the lunacy of what happening on-screen, we always think bigger and better is the way to go…except in Transformers 2. Yet for as long as films have had that genre defining high action content,…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Guilty Pleasures
Guilty Pleasure films usually fall into 1 of 3 categories 1.) Ones we don’t tell anyone we own 2.) Ones we don’t watch with anyone or 3.) Ones we just can’t figure what makes it so morbidly appealing. Now it may be one or two of the 3 said categories, but if all three do in fact apply, then you’ve either got a porno/snuff film or some kind of utterly terrible My Little Pony film…in that case you’ve probably come to this site looking for the wrong Guilty Pleasures:) Inspired by both Olive (of Movie News First) and Kai (of The List), I have gotten the urge to not only list my favorite Guilty…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Netflix Recommendations That Surprised Me…Round 1
One of the thing I like about Netflix is their “Watch Instantly” feature. That way I can try a movie out with out waiting for the DVD to show up, so if it sucks, I haven’t wasted 2 days waiting for its arrival. Anyway, after the successful viewing of Cashback (which I’ll write about below) I bought the compatible ROKU player (FYI: not a sales pitch) so I could transmit the signal to my TV. The also just released a workable disc for the Wii and both work fantastic!! So after some great viewings of films I would have otherwise never watched, I was so impressed with them after the…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Movies That Should Be on Blu Ray
With the abundance of Blu Ray titles on the market, I find myself thinking that there are a few worthy (and much-needed) titles that deserve the “New Blu Treatment”. I know it’s a slow process as there’s got to be an incredible back log of films still to be made over. Yet, as I see what has been released the more, I feel sorry for these titles not getting a fair shake and my heart goes out to the patient fans who remain wanting. What’s worse it that some of these films never even got anything more that a “VHS dump” version on DVD. So the fact that they are…
