Taking a breather from movie news and trailers, we have word on something extraordinary happening in Dallas next month. The Dallas Symphony will be holding a very special engagement with two legendary musicians. On Friday July 20, 2012 the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center will have Joe Cocker and Huey Lewis & The News share top billing for a one-night-only, can’t miss show.
Joe Cocker is one of the most popular artists in the world, known for his bluesy, rhythmic style, gritty vocals and eccentric stage presence. Combining soul and R&B with rock and power ballads, Joe Cocker creates an inimitable style instantly recognized and celebrated. America fell in love with Joe Cocker after a legendary performance at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969, and his first big hit was “With a Little Help from My Friends,” with guitar legend, Jimmy Page, the first of several iconic covers of songs by The Beatles. Other popular hits by Joe Cocker are “Cry Me a River,” “The Letter” and “You Are So Beautiful.” Joe Cocker is a Grammy Golden Globe and Academy Award artist, and has given many prominent performances, including the inauguration ceremony for President George Bush.
Not good enough you say? Well that’s OK, because the stage is just getting warmed up. The other half of this dream concert is the energetic Huey Lewis & The News who will also be filling the symphony’s halls with their music which has sold more than 30 million albums. Huey has long been considered the sound of the working man and his music combines power rock and smooth ballads for a sound overflowing with “heart and soul”. Melding California cool and Memphis soul, lead vocalist Huey Lewis has a voice with a full of spirit band rhythmic and rich in sound. The iconic band of Huey Lewis & The News was formed in 1979 and over thirty years later, they are still producing hits. Their latest album, “Soulsville,” was released in 2010. The beloved group is ranked in the top 200 selling music groups of all time by the Recording Industry Association of America, and have produced 19 top-ten singles. Number one hits by Huey Lewis & The News include “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Stuck With You,” “We are The World,” and “Perfect World,” featured in the 1985 film Back to the Future.
