Exclusive First Listen: David Fleming’s Score to ‘Americana’

Composer David Fleming seems to get to the heart of a film better and quicker than any one else in the business. The way he looks at the story and crafts his sound is as inspired as it is innovative. Take a listen to what he did with Damsel and you’ll get an idea of how much his work influences and elevates the picture. Fleming is no stranger to down home music palettes – he did some earnest and emotional pieces for Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy as well as the epitome of red, white and blue with James Gunn’s Superman.

With Americana, Fleming embraced country and western music with his use of dulcimers, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, fiddle, vintage piano and electric bass, creating a richly atmospheric score steeped in vintage American musical traditions. Michael Geiger’s deep vocalizations further anchor the vivid soundscapes throughout.

With a rousing and rustic collection of cues, this original score by Emmy-winning composer David Fleming is a pitch perfect effort. Lakeshore Records will release digitally September 5. And to get you excited, take a listen to “The Old New West” which is the standout cue from the film and sets the tone for this neo-western caper.

Working on Tost’s project, Fleming had this to say:

“Creating the score for ‘Americana’ meant a full immersion into the deep and beautiful world of country and western music, including a trove of albums and scores that inspired our writer & director, Tony Tost. While the score is grounded in the tradition of country music decades-old, I also sought to evoke the feeling of a truly ancient old west, full of ghosts and mystery. To help me achieve this, the late Michael Geiger’s brilliant, gravelly bass voice acts as the narrator for the score. Adding strains of pedal steel guitar and an orchestra recorded in Nashville, I came away from this film with a profound respect for this musical culture and the tradition of storytelling that it is seeped in.”

You can always count on Lakeshore Records to curate exceptional film scores and soundtracks from musicians and composers making the biggest waves. So, if you haven’t seen it yet, get excited about the deep fried sound Fleming gives Tost’s Tarantino/Coen-styled crime caper. Rest assured, even if the plan goes to scrap, the sound palette will get things over the goal line.
