“It’s Halloween. Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.” That’s a saying that pops up a lot this time of year. Well, as I’ve always asked, does it only have to be scary? What if it’s a treat? On that note (music pun intended) we’re happy to give your ears something special: a surprising and haunting cover of Depeche Mode’s “Behind The Wheel” taken from Hallow Road—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. It is supremely tense, but that’s just what the composers of Hallow Road were going for. Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible-Fallout) and Peter Adams (Survive, Going All The Way) utilize synths, strings and layered woodwinds to create a dark and atmospheric backdrop to the horror thriller. They take inspiration from Depeche Mode’s 1987 song in both a slow and foreboding version that showcases a ghostly muted choir as well as creating six more tracks that are menacing variations on the song.
It was pitch perfect to set the tone of the story, and while this was released in March (hardly the time for ghosts and goblins), the XYZ film is back in Theaters on October 31 for a Special One Night Double Feature w/ Vincent Must Die. Tone is something notable in many of Balfe’s efforts, and this (while not truly easy on the ears or nerves) delivers the goods. Herein, Balfe and Adams note that:
“Babak Anvari had a very clear and inspired vision for the film — he wanted the music to feel deeply textural and atmospheric. We explored this by recording solo woodwinds and transforming them into haunting, layered soundscapes that mirror the film’s tension and setting in the woods. Re-imagining Depeche Mode’s ‘Behind the Wheel’ for the track titled ‘Come to Terms,’ on the soundtrack was a highlight — blending choir, orchestra, and electronics into something haunting and darkly beautiful.”

Two parents receive a distressing late-night call from their teenage daughter, who has just accidentally hit a pedestrian.
