This morning, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the full list of nominees for the 85 Annual Academy Awards and it’s a surprising compilation. Like yesterday’s BAFTA nomination announcement there’s some love for Life of Pi and Django Unchained so that makes me happy. Also I’m happy to see all 5 animated films (and the superb Paperman short) get recognized. Take that BAFTAs! If you haven’t already seen the list, have a look at all of the 2013 nominees below.

There’s a saying that it’s just an honor to be nominated and that’s entirely true. But now that we see who gets a little love we can start complaining about those deserving souls who got left in the cold. John Hawkes for instance; did the academy even see The Sessions? My guess is no.
The 85th Academy Awards which will take place on Sunday, February 24th at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. This year looks to be an unconventional one as one of the premier and most crass (and American) funny men in the business Seth MacFarlane will be hosting this year. Whatcha think? Happy about the noms, or upset about the snubs? Sound off below!

Grant that I generally view the Oscars as being kind of a waste of time, and that I’m inclined to care little and less about them– but I can’t help but be pleased by most of these nominations all the same. Good stuff. Especially Beasts. Color me surprised it received so many nominations. That’s exactly what the Academy Awards should be about, though: recognizing and celebrating talent, whether it hails from a source that’s fresh on the scene or far more experienced.
