Brittany Allen, aka BRITT, is a multi-disciplinary artist, who on the heels of a successful career as an actor, is now emerging as one of the most exciting young female composers to watch. Her first score was for the critically acclaimed indie What Keeps You Alive (SXSW ’18) which was named a NYTimes Critic’s Pick, one of Rolling Stone’s Top Ten Horror Films of 2018, and hit the Top Ten films on Netflix.
She followed that up with her “soul-tugging score” for Z, one of AMC / Shudder’s most watched films of 2020. Most recently, Allen scored the fan favorite episode of “American Horror Stories,” the anthology spinoff of the iconic AHS franchise. She also has just completed her second season scoring the CW / Netflix anthology “Two Sentence Horror Stories.” She scored Selfie, which was recently acquired by Netflix after premiering at SXSW 2020.
Allen crafts moving, dark, melodic themes and fresh, edgy sounds, leaning deeply into the character’s emotional journey. As a songwriter her proclivity to dark material meets her pop sensibility, and she is a true solo act, having written, produced and mixed all of the tracks on Khami Lion (pronounced chameleon). As an actor, Allen is an Emmy-Award winner, and was most recently celebrated for her iconic turn as Popclaw in Amazon’s “The Boys.”
We got to chat with this delightful and highly talented artist for an hour to discuss her career, her passions and her dreams. Now the toughest thing about the creative industry isn’t delivering a product. It’s finding the confidence in yourself and trusting your talents. Once that happened, Brittany came out out of the gates like a lion.
We spent a lot of time talking about her new album – a collection of catchy, virtuosic and powerful singles she’s released in the past few years. But one of our talking points was Brittany’s shift from acting to music (something she’s always dabbled in). Along the way, she did some soul searching and did not like the feeling of powerlessness that came with being on camera.
With music, Brittany could be sure that every note, beat, and lyric would come out just as she intended. So began a very long path to writing and producing the music she had in her. The trip was worth it because Brittany not only landed the features listed above, but her music – a combination of the poetry of Sarah McLachlan and the style/attitude of Prince – will rip your mind open.
In my opinion, Khamai Lion is the unofficial album of the Fall. Do not miss it. Now grab your headphones, and join us as we get to know Brittany Allen!
You can get Khamai Lion from Burning Witches Records and their Bandcamp page, as well as from Mondo who has an exclusive variant and a bonus 7” disc of non album single “The Impossible”. An early incarnation of Britt with a pop banger.
