Interview…Composer Dan Deacon on Creating Symphonies in the Mundane in ‘Task’ on HBO

There’s an old saying that the object of any art is the transfer of emotion. That is true, regardless of the medium, the artist, or the exhibition. Now the art we love most on this site is the art of entertainment, specifically the alchemy created when making music for moving pictures. Over the years, we’ve been very lucky and honored to have spoken to dozens upon dozens of creatives who craft sonic atmospheres for film and TV. And because music can take any shape form, duration, style, etc., you never know what’s going to move the mercury of your soul.

That brings us to today’s show. One of the absolute finest and most impacting scores we’ve heard in the last ten years is Dan Deacon‘s music to Hustle. The 2022 Netflix film, directed by Jeremiah Zagar, was a perfect opportunity for the electronic dynamo to make a sonic splash. The label might have been a little worried as to whether he could deliver the goods, but as the film was temped with lots of his music, Deacon made an easy transition. The film would be much less fun, exciting and emotionally driven had anyone else been tasked with the job.

To weave his magic, Deacon finds a lot of satisfaction collaborating with others. That has helped him bridge the gap between touring as a solo artist and working with some of cinema’s all-time greats…like Francis Ford Coppola. On the show Deacon dropped so many great lines, quotes and experiences. One of which is so essential for any creative to hear: be aware of impulsive decisions. As he says, “Sometimes ‘new’ wins the day just because it’s different from what you’ve either grown used to or tired of.” Deacon also talks about collaboration being like a Venn diagram where the slice in the middle is the meeting point between two (sometimes) completely different views or opinions on the project.

As far as we’re concerned, when you throw Deacon’s music over your ears, you’re always going to get something that quickens pulses. We were thrilled to speak to him about his background, his work on projects like Brad Ingelsby‘s HBO series, TASK, and more. With compositions like kaleidoscopic musical experiences, Deacon is a pro at crafting symphonies in the mundane. Enjoy this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience!
