Most of the time, a film would be nothing without the musical score. We hold the music in higher regard than the narrative itself, and our heroes have always been film composers. Getting to run this site for almost fifteen years, I can admit to just plain geeking out when speaking to people in the film music community. Case in point.
Randy Edelman is a legendary singer, songwriter, orchestrator, conductor, and a seasoned music man who has quite literally scored our childhood. Just looking at the impressive list of titles to his credit (Dragonheart, Beethoven, Troop Beverly Hills, The Mask, My Cousin Vinny, Angels in the Outfield, Shanghai Noon, Daylight) it’s shocking to know that he had an entire musical career before getting his big break on films like Twins, Kindergarten Cop, and the ultra popular TV show MacGyver.
On today’s show, we’re joined by our co-ost from across the pond, Steve, better known as Opus Science Collective. We had him on the show last year and we found common ground discussing the works of Randy Edelman, most notably, Ghostbusters II. It is not an easy task to outdo Elmer Bernstein, but Steve and I put that score to the 1989 sequel on a pedestal. I can’t tell you how much that music means to me, and getting to speak with Randy was quite possibly a bucket list opportunity for both of us.
We caught up with Randy while he was preparing for a live concert show in New York City, and he’s been hard at work on that over the years. This masterful musician is a quick take and right away he pegged us as fanboys (like we could hide it!), but the man has stories about his stories; we could have spent spent a full show just talking about one of the films he scored, or even one song he wrote. We were humbled to get this much one-on-one time with him so without further ado, we present to you the one and only Randy Edelman!
And for those of you wanting more of Randy’s work, we put together a music mix to give you an idea of how truly gifted and versatile Mr. Edelman’s music has been and added incredible depth to big Hollywood films.
