Interview…Composers Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg on Music, Metal and Mayhem in ‘Cobra Kai’

You want to become a master of kicking ass in a musical soundscape? It’s easy! Just remember these three simple rules: Strike first, strike hard, show no mercy. Well, whether it’s sweeping the leg, or nailing a face-melting guitar/saxophone solo, our guests today can certainly tell us about their path to be the best…around. It takes time, talent, patience and a good amount of networking.

Earlier this year, we spoke with composer Zach Robinson and had a blast getting to learn about his musical journey. Today, Zach is back as well as the other half of the sonic dojo that props up the Cobra Kai TV show. The duo have a great working relationship going back to their time working under/with Christophe Beck. Since lending a hand to huge films like Frozen, Ant-Man, Edge of Tomorrow they have gone on to almost greater success on the small screen.

The Karate Kid sequel series began on YouTube Red and even before making the jump to Netflix, this little crane-kicking engine that could has done nothing but succeed. It’s because of the story, the casting and the music. As such, Robinson and Birenberg have raised the bar in each successive season and fans can’t get enough. La-La Land Records released their music across three stunning CD editions and Mondo put out an extra special vinyl edition of seasons 1 through 3 (see below). It is RAD!

Our hour-long podcast with synthwave pioneer Zach Robinson and luxuriantly mustachioed Leo Birenberg is almost as fun as watching an episode of Cobra Kai. We cover a lot of ground (including a hint of a special physical release for the music from S4) and have a lot of laughs, so I’m going to be brief and just let you enjoy the ride.

Mondo and Madison Gate Records are proud to present the premiere vinyl release of Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson’s incredible score to the Netflix streaming phenomenon COBRA KAI. The 3 disc vinyl set features music from the first 3 seasons of the hit series, curated by the composers into themed collections of music: Disc 1: COBRA KAI – a mix of music scoring the most badass dojo in the Valley, Disc 2: MIYAGI-DO – selections from the music scoring the LaRusso family and its ties to the Miyagi legacy, and last but not least Disc 3: FINAL FIGHTS – the music from all three of the explosive season finale episodes. All of the music has been hand-selected, and in some cases expanded from its original form, for the most definitive COBRA KAI listening experience available
