We live for films that surprise, entertain and delight. Whether it is the subject matter or the talent involved, when something raises eyebrows or pulses it tends to stick with you. One such film is James Marsh’s latest effort. The BAFTA and Academy Award winner (The Theory of Everything) brings us a stunning adaptation of the life of playwright Samuel Beckett.
In our eyes, the most remarkable part of Dance First is the writing from Neil Forsyth. It’s sharp on paper but is increasingly elevated by the amazing cast which make the scenes and dialog so compelling. So it’s no surprise that we were excited to speak to Marsh about what it took to pull this together. We discuss his creative experiences and dive into some of the many (read: MANY!) brilliant lines and deliveries from the exceptional cast.
Check out the interview and then seek out the film. Scratch that, reverse it. But be sure you do both. Enjoy!
Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) plays Samuel Beckett with young Beckett played by Fionn O’Shea (Normal People) in a sweeping account of the life of this 20th century icon. Parisian bon vivant, World War II resistance fighter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright, philandering husband and recluse, Samuel Beckett lived a life of many parts. In this playful film we see his life through his mistakes and fraught relationships with James Joyce (Aidan Gillen – Game Of Thrones), his wife Suzanne (Sandrine Bonnaire – Vagabond) and his lover Barbara Bray (Maxine Peake – The Theory of Everything).
Dance First is a SKY Original feature which will have its U.S. release in select cinemas on August 9.
