Interview…Director Peter Hutchings on ‘Which Brings Me to You’

It’s always delightful and refreshing when a film plays out against type and expectations. All too often we know how something will end well before the halfway mark. But in the case of Peter Hutchings’ romantic comedy, the film has enough twists and turns to keep things exciting and offer a handful of surprises.

We sit with director Hutchings to talk about various aspects of the film adapted from the epistolary novel by Steve Almond and Julianna Baggott. One of the most interesting aspects of the production is how the team came up with an innovative framework for the film’s many flashback sequences. It feels appropriate to the conversational nature of the two characters sharing life experiences and the ups and downs of the dating world.

While the title sounds like something you’d hear a therapist say,What Brings Me to You has solid performances from its leads, an emotional score from Spencer David Hutchings (Pete’s brother), a selection of well-appointed source music and some jaw-dropping cinematography from Karin Silva makes every frame of the story look like magic hour…even the interior shots. Enjoy this chat with Peter!

In WHICH BRINGS ME TO YOU, two romantic burnouts, Jane and Will, are immediately drawn to each other at a mutual friend’s wedding. After a disastrous hookup in the coatroom, the two spend the next 24 hours together, trading candid confessions of messy histories and heartbreak, on the off chance that this fling might be the real thing. Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff star in this hilarious tale from the team behind The Hating Game.

Decal will release WHICH BRINGS ME TO YOU only in theaters on January 19, 2024
