Interview…Kay Hanley and Tom Polce on Bringing Melodic Magnificence to ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’

Hey there, score fans. If you’re like me, the first property you think of when someone says “musical” is probably not Star Trek. Well, you’re not wrong, but thanks to the efforts from the dynamic duo of Kay Hanley and Tom Polce that’s gonna change. These two seasoned musicians have outdone themselves with the sing-song soundtrack that, as far as those characters who boldly go, really changes everything.

Episode 9 in season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds made waves in TV as the first full musical episode in franchise history. Cleverly named “Subspace Rhapsody,” the story puts the crew of the USS Enterprise and others in this universe in peril; the kind that could only be overcome by digging deep, finding your inner musical voice, and belting it out with a full ensemble of galactically capable crew members.

Kay and Tom have more than 30 years experience playing and making music – both together and separately. While they are sonically proficient, they have a mindset about life and pursuits which come from their experiences growing up in New England, specifically their time in the Boston music scene. It’s exciting to hear these kinds of stories from people who are propelled by an innate desire to simply make music.

The episode sports several types of song choices including (but not limited to) a light-hearted waltz, a pensive introspective solo, and the all-out musical number to bring it all home. In short, it’s like fireworks in space. The diversity is as surprising and entertaining as the lyrics, and it just sings. Pun intended!

Now what is a musical without a vinyl release? Answer: just an MP3 that might easily get lost in your phone’s library or playlist. But this sweet and succinct single LP captures the fun and frivolity of “Subspace Rhapsody” and is presented with beautiful art that recalls the golden age of musicals. The cover art seemingly channels one of the most famous musical properties, Singin’ in the Rain. Nice touch. The soundtrack to S2E9 was released on vinyl from Lakeshore Records – it looks and sounds beautiful. Set your wallet to “purchase” and get a copy today!

We had so much fun on this episode. These two came along, and just like a song, they brightened my day. So now, grab your headphones, find your captain’s chair and join us for this great chat with Kay Hanley and Tom Polce!
