Interview…Scary Good Fun Talking with Brett Simmons

When film fans get to talking about what we like, time can quickly get away from us. As such, we had a fun-filled chat catching up with our good buddy, filmmaker Brett Simmons. And isn’t that a cool name? If he wasn’t making films, he could very well be a pro wrestler or something else in show business. Anyway, we spent about an hour talking about new projects on his plate and things he’s trying to get off the ground.

Right now, he’s writing another fun slasher movie – his cult hit You Might Be the Killer is evidence he knows what he’s doing. Brett also has an awesome take on haunted house films with an idea that is pretty genius. Note to all you creatives out there: the important thing about a story, more than the plot, is actually the tone. Sometimes it’s a tightrope walk where many a narrative has failed to make it across the production gorge. Case in point: Will Storr Vs. the Supernatural which is a book Brett option to try and adapt it.

Further, Brett shared some stories about pitching his movies. What he’s learned is that the idea of a horror/comedy is not always well received. Although it does well in theaters and fans love it as a genre, it can impede a project getting green lit. But, you might ask, how can that be when there are so many out there like Shaun of the Dead, Behind the Mask, and others? Well, producers have anxiety when a film is really funny and really scary. So while something clever like a “Corromedy” actually sounds like spooky dumb fun, things fare better using terms like “dark comedy” or “light horror”.

We had a really good time, and if it wasn’t for Brett trying to make it to a screening of How to Train Your Dragon we probably could’ve kept rolling for 17 hours. No joke. Enjoy this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience, and do check out Brett’s stuff. He’s a pretty awesome dude. His movies are dope, he’s fun to talk to, and he works with some remarkably creative people. Now let’s get this show started!
