The dream of every creative is to see their idea brought into the world. Yet the process of getting something from starting line to finish line can be anything but a straight shot. Ask an artist, filmmaker, or anyone in entertainment, and they’ll all concur.
For a variety of reasons, the process can be drawn out, delayed, very nearly cancelled or worse. But with luck, patience and perseverance, a dream realized is worth all the agony. That brings us to today’s guest. You could say that a fifteen year journey to craft a seven-minute animated short film is a long run for a short slide. But if that was the case, you likely haven’t seen this film.
The heartwarming tale of Nate & John comes to us via writer/producer Michael Bickel and the concept is based on a similarly charming encounter with his barber many years ago. Anyone reading this can probably attest to an unexpected conversation with a stranger that turned into a surprising or delightful experience. Our site is sure full of them, but it doesn’t take much to be kind. Just asking someone “how are you doing?” can yield a smile, a story, or, maybe, a friendship.
We spoke to Michael about his story which was co-written with his brother, David Bickel, directed by Jumai Yusuf, and features some wonderful music from composer Pedro Osuna. Free of any dialog, this beautifully displays the friendship between a barber and his client who form an unlikely bond that develops over their lifetimes.
The short film, a labor of love for Bickel, is one of the most affecting and charming stories in recent years. It’s a poignant reminder of the power of human connection and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Can a meaningful friendship bloom from one of the more banal events in our daily lives? Yes, it can. Get hair cut. Get lollipop. Get life-long friend. Would that were everything in life so easy and meaningful. Enjoy this chat with Michael and check out the short as soon as you can!
NATE & JOHN heartwarming animation short qualifies for the 97th Academy Awards.
