Interview…Composer/Music Editor Robinton Hobbs on Score Production and Joy House Music

These days, regardless of the industry, we all need a little help. Whether that is outsourcing entire productions or a few hours of assistance and consulting, we can all use a support system. As the world grows ever more hungry for entertainment, the talented tradespeople making movies/shows, games, and music are in a flurry trying to deliver what’s needed. So to help with that project flow, Joy House Music has helped plenty of features and shows get the musical attention needed to finish the job.

JMH is a woman-lead business working towards innovating the world of score production with a commitment to community, diversity and equality. Their company is a bullpen full of composers supporting composers through all areas of score production while uplifting the community and providing a spotlight for emerging and diverse creators. Their teams in LA, New York, and London can work all over the world with a click of a button.

Further, this elite force of musical operatives are ready to come on board at a moment’s notice – whether it is an assistant for three days or a score production team for a month – providing help in different capacities: Composition, Additional Music, Music Editing, Arranging, Synthestration/Mockup, Orchestration, Copying, Music Preparation, ProTools Session Setup, or just telling you where to find great tacos in LA.

We spoke with co-founder Robinton Hobbs who is a composer, music editor and producer based in Los Angeles. He studied music production at Berklee College of Music and spent a decade playing with rock bands before making the transition into media composing full time.

Hobbs is also the COO of Joy Music House, where he has helped produce scores which include Emile Mosseri’s Oscar nominated score for Minari, Terence Blanchard’s The Woman King, and served as the music editor on the hit Netflix docuseries Untold. His most recent album, Elder Garden Vocations, was released in 2021.

On this episode we talked about Hobbs’ musical interests and things he grew up on, especially his fondness for video games; Hobbs is a big fan of the early Diablo and Warcraft games as well as Final Fantasy Tactics because of the music. Now, as a working professional, he enjoys the creative freedoms and looping dynamics video games offer as he composes. We dive into that and more including the composer workshops that JMH offers. Enjoy this chat with Robinton Hobbs!!
