Well friends it looks like a good director knows when to hold em and when to fold em…
Gore Verbinski is done dealing with “above” the water adventures and is now going “under”. Since he took the job of helming the Bioshock video game adaptation, the possibility of directing another Pirates film is either schedule prohibiting or he had decided he’s done with the series. I guess he did what Sam Raimi should have done, and what Christopher Nolan is thinking of doing.
To his credit he did something only dreamed of before: creating a living, breathing, wildly popular (and profitable) franchise from a simple idea/novelty. He looks to have the talent (and major financial backing) to create a winner out of almost anything. I wonder if he could have had the same success making a movie about a Hawaiian milk cap game and saved POGS in the 90’s? That last part was a joke…
Now I’ve never actually played Bioshock but have watched friends play it and heard lots of people rave about it. Here’s a little video of the gameplay for those of you even less in the loop than myself…

With a much more interesting, intricate premise and story line source material to work with (than Pirates: The Ride) I think Gore can focus more on visuals and sets rather than trying to create mythology out of thin air. At least it’ll be easier than and hopefully more successful than Doom. I kind of wish he had been given the chance to make Return to Castle Wolfenstien or God of War, but that’s just me.
Here’s hoping he has some magic up his sleeves to triumph where others have failed. Annnd whether or not he returns to the Pirates franchise, I wish him good luck in any endeavor. I’m looking forward to more of his work. How about the rest of you?
