Nominees Announced for the 2013 EE British Academy Awards

Across the pond, in the land of the Queen, high tea, James Bond, and the 2012 Olympics, some of the world’s premier and distinguished entertainers come together to celebrate the contributions the Brits have made to the world of film and television with their own awards ceremony. Not limited strictly to British thespians and filmmakers the counterpart to our own Academy Awards, The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), is one of many awards shows this time of year that honorsand lauds the best and brightest. The BAFTAs are quite a prestigious affair and they’ve just released their full list of nominees. Have a look below and start placing your bets now.

The BAFTAs are not necessarily a crystal ball into how the Oscars will play out but should give you an idea of who the front runners are. Though Lincoln andSkyfall are two of the heavy favorites, I’m pulling for Life of Pi and am pleased to see all the noms it picked up. Small humorous bit below, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers picked up a nomination for Special Visual Effects but it is listed as Marvel Avengers Assemble, most likely so not to be confused with Britain’s own Avengers.

Also it’s funny to see Django Unchained get a nom for editing considering how difficult it must have been to get QT’s supposedly 4+ hour cut of it down to 2 hours and 45 mins. Still he got a nom for best director and that’s gotta count for something right? Yet the oddest bit I find is that neither Wreck-It Ralph or, the worse offense, The Pirates! Band of Misfits was not recognized in the animated film category, tough luck for Peter Lord and Aardman Animation. Anyway, have a look at the nominees and check out more at Bafta.org.

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday February 10th at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London and be hosted by the one and only Stephen Fry. The BAFTAs will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD, preceded by a red carpet show on BBC Three. To those of you with a pretty good cable package you can most likely pick it up with no problem as the ceremony is also broadcast in all major territories around the world.
