Ohhh, Look…Nintendo Characters Reimagined In Stunning Japanese Woodblock Artwork

A few months back our friends at Geekologie featured some stellar artwork from artist Jed Henry and printmaker David Ball (of Ukiyo-e Heroes). The duo’s work in Japanese woodblock should more than delight art enthusiasts and those from the 8-bit generation. Below are some signature pieces from the collection which show their take on the more famous Nintendo properties. Among them are some stunning renditions of The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and Castlevania to name a few. Have a look and be amazed. Also, at the bottom, are two videos that show the intricate and painstaking color process for the Mario Kart piece. The Japanese word for Wow is Sugoi, but what’s the translation for effen amazing?!…

5 Films We’re Looking Forward To At The Austin Film Festival [AFF]

I’ve spent the last year covering independent films both at festivals and from my Netflix queue, and the ones I’m always most moved by are those that explore the many layers of our relationships with one another. Whether we’re family, friends or lovers, relationships are immensely complex, and if I may summarize a quote from an advertisement I recently saw in the tube in London, while love doesn’t make the world go round, it does help make the ride worthwhile. There are so many films being made that counter the typical Hollywood, idealized version of our relationships, and instead present the audience with something real. In anticipation for the kickoff…

Official Synopsis Revealed for 'Kick-Ass 2'

In 2010, Kick-Ass had a pretty favorable cinematic run. Thanks to Matthew Vaughn‘s stylized direction and the likable cast, it successfully blended a Spider-Man level origin story with the boundary pushing content from the comic that inspired it. While I still think the film feels a little flat (despite Cage killing it as Big Daddy and Chloë Moretz giving one hell of a performance) things look more full-bodied as the returning cast and newcomers already make this sound like a home run. For those curious about what’s in store for our off-kilter heroes, read the official synopsis below: Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit:…

    Sweet Trailer…'Jack Reacher'

When it comes to action, Tom Cruise isn’t known for playing by the rules. As an operative, agent, even a vampire, he’s known to put the hurt on someone. So when justice needs to be done, he goes full on vigilante. We got just a taste of the bad-assery to come this Winter in the teaser for Jack Reacher, but now we get an deeper and more incendiary look at this story…Enjoy!! When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. On interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note: “Get Jack Reacher!” So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting…

Robert Pattinson, Carey Mulligan Costar in "Hold Onto Me"

Following Robert Pattinson’s post-Twilight* career trajectory is so far turning out to be a productive use of time; he’s already stepped out of the boundaries of that franchise by taking the lead in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (Grady’s review), he’s on the cast of Werner Herzog’s next outing, and now he’s signed up for James Marsh’s post-Shadow Dancer project, Hold Onto Me, where he’ll work with the endlessly talented Carey Mulligan. Pattinson takes efforts to prove himself as a real actor daily, it seems, and while Mulligan has no such chip on her shoulder she’s still one of the best young actresses working in film today, so suffice it to say that I’d be…

    First Official Teaser for 'Carrie'

MGM’s remake of Brian De Palma’s classic teen horror film, Carrie, is a very, very real thing, and the release of the first official trailer for the project solidifies that fact. We’ve seen posters and production stills featuring star Chloë Grace Moretz in what’s clearly the film’s last act; maybe unsurprisingly, the teaser, seen below, continues holding the party line by displaying Ms. Moretz in full crimson-soaked attire. Is there no other way to sell this picture than to point to its finale? If anything, the footage appears to confirm the murmurings that Kimberly Peirce intends to keep the film closer to Stephen King’s original story; while it’s a short clip, it’s…

Ant-Man Marching to Theaters in 2015

Potentially exciting news for Marvel diehards, disciples of Edgar Wright, and anyone with a general interest in superhero films: Wright’s first foray into superherodom, Ant-Man, has an official release date of November 6th, 2015. The announcement comes from an update Disney sent out regarding their slate of upcoming films, which mostly just confirms information we already knew or could have guessed ourselves (like the fact that Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 will both be in 3D). Ant-Man having a date on the books, though, is news enough almost on its own merits if only because of Wright’s involvement; he’s an exciting filmmaker and someone whose projects (including next year’s The…

    The Criterion Files: Sisters

Sisters: Directed by: Brian De Palma Written by: Brian De Palma, Louise Rose Starring: Margot Kidder, Jennifer Salt, William Finley, Charles Durning Cinematography: Gregory Sandor Music by: Bernard Herrmann Released: March 27, 1973 How does a film about voyeurism stand out in the oeuvre of Brian De Palma? By existing as a work of pure, interconnected, voyeuristic thrills. De Palma has been fascinated with the subject for nearly the span of his entire career, and even a cursory glance at his body of work reveals countless pictures into which voyeurism figures as a theme or motif, from obvious entries such as Blow Out, Dressed to Kill, and Body Double and…
