For those in the mood for something a little less Hollywood, this might be up your alley. This deliciously indie-feeling and quirky drama stars Jess Weixler as Jillian, a Stanford law-school dropout, who is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. On the day of her college boyfriend’s birthday, she finds herself stuck running an ice cream truck fending off Los Angeles locals and oddball friends alike. Free Samples takes place all in one day and shows Jillian waking from her aimless daze as she begins to see that life doesn’t stop just because she wants it to. Check out the trailer below and thanks to The Film Stage for the heads up.
Free Samples is directed by Jay Gammill and along with Jess Weixler (Teeth), co-stars Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Ritter. While I haven’t seen anything from Weixler or Gammill, I have to say that Jason Ritter has been just solid in everything I’ve seen him in. Then there’s Eisenberg who always bring tons of talent to every one of his roles, so there’s your quality check right there. Fun fact: the two starred and were quite brilliant in The Education of Charlie Banks (which is a pretty underrated and an awesome debut from Fred Durst…yes that Fred Durst).
Anyway, Free Samples will premier next month at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th, 2012. Even without the stereotypical sounding indie music this still looks pretty good. But I’ll ask you…What do you think? Anyone on board??

I’m usually willing to give most indies a shot, but I’m not sold on the lead character. I’ll agree with you on Eisenberg and Ritter, but I think I’ll pass on it solely based on what I saw from the lead character in the trailer.
