With fierce conviction to tell stories that some might consider offensive or taboo, director Steve McQueen has twice proved himself to be an unflinching filmmaker. He gave us Hunger, then followed that with Shame and now his latest film 12 Years A Slave, adapted from the novel of the same name, tells the incredible true story of Solomon Northup, a free man who was kidnapped in 1841 and forced into slavery at a Louisiana cotton plantation.
Facing cruelty from his slave owner, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life. The film is based on Northrop’s own memoirs. We’ve posted some still shots and even counted it as one of our most anticipated films of 2013 but now we have the first trailer…enjoy!
Starring an impressive cast which includes the likes of Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Adepero Oduye (Pariah), Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup. Directed by Steve McQueen, Fox Searchlight Pictures has slated 12 Years A Slave for release this Fall (in select theaters) on October 18, 2013.
