End of the world films are a dime a dozen and thanks in part to the SyFy channel the whole sub-genre has been deemed a little trite and passe. But while many fail there are some that although they don’t redefine much of the formula still prove to be entertaining enough to be worth the time. Today we get the international trailer for Jeff Renfroe’s The Colony which on the surface has a little bit more going for it thanks to Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton and even Kevin Zegers. It’s the standard, “hey a distress signal, hey let’s check it out, hey something’s not right” fare but could be fun. After all people said the same thing about Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead before they saw it didn’t they? Have a look for yourselves….
Set during the next ice age, an outpost of colonists struggle to survive below the world’s frozen surface. Short on supplies, and plagued by illness and internal conflict, the colonists suspect the worst when they mysteriously lose contact with their only other known settlement.
The trailer does show a little too much and for what they’re supposed to be teasing it looks like they showed most of the movie. Either way it’s got our interest. Fishburne has been extremely busy since The Matrix series ended and it’s good to see him in a film again. He’s been working on lots of TV series (including the new Hannibal show starring Mads Mikkelsen) but this looks like another (hopefully) solid effort.
Currently Alliance Films has slated The Colony for release in Canada this April, however no US date has been announced yet. What do you think so far? Any of this look good to you?

I agree, the trailer shows a bit too much, which was my immediate reaction after watching. but it may be a fun Netflix night choice! 🙂
