Looks like the trailer industry has thrown us a movie that will actually be as funny as they’re advertising to be. The Informant is a film from Steven Soderbergh coming out this fall and stars Matt Damon and Scott Bakula…really?… How’s that for casting out of left field??:P Anyway, check out the trailer which looks pretty damn funny…

From First Showing we get this brief tid-bit about Damon’s new flick:
Premise: The government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon).
The Informant is directed by Oscar winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, of Out of Sight, Traffic, Solaris, The Good German, the Ocean’s Trilogy, Che, and The Girlfriend Experience most recently. The screenplay was adapted by Scott Z. Burns, of The Bourne Ultimatum previously, and is based on Kurt Eichenwald’s book of the same name. Warner Brothers is bringing The Informant to theaters on October 9th this fall.
I’ll go on a limb and say that Sodrbergh is not the greatest filmmaker out there. He’s good, but has some missteps…watch Ocean’s 12 and you may agree with me (it was the sequel no one asked for and completely failed to deliver). I don’t find that his style really comes across like a Spielberg, a Bay or a Del Toro, but as far as this movie goes, I’m interested because, over the years, I’ve found Matt Damon increasingly watchable. At first I didn’t like him, then I saw Good Will Hunting a few more times (then throw in multiple viewings of Rounders, The Bourne Identity, Titan A.E. and Ocean’s 11 about 20 times) and I’ll say he grew on me. Personally, Damon’s best work is in Soderbergh’s Ocean’s series (especially the first one) playing goofy characters, so this is right up his alley and I’m really looking forward to see him in this. If this movie comes to be even half as funny as the trailer makes it out to be, this film should fare pretty well and give audiences a good laugh…kind of like Juno…
My one fear is that this film may be misrepresented which was the case with Burn After Reading. It looked to be a comedy, was actually a very dark comedy and ultimately just trash in my opinion. What do the rest of you think? Does ‘The Informant’ look goofy enough to work??
