If you love Pixar, especially their 2003 mega-splash Finding Nemo, then skip everything past this and jump to the trailer below!…For those of you still with us, we’ll resume now…This year we were fortunate enough to get two features from the animation giant (Inside Out –check out our review here– and the upcoming The Good Dinosaur), but the horizon is just teeming with follow-ups to their biggest hits. So, look forward to next June because the Nemo gang is back for an even bigger adventure spearheaded, err, headlined (‘spear’ sounds too violent in regards to fish) by the titular blue doll Dory. This sequel features Andrew Stanton back at the helm…

G-S-T Review…This Is 40
Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 puts a hysterical spin on the fact that everyone gets old. In fact, the comedy is so refreshing that it must have taken a lesson or two from his 2009 film Funny People; if you’re gonna make a movie with somewhat depressing subject matter, put some humor in it (especially if the word funny is in the title!). Just because you’re dealing with some very heavy emotions and situations doesn’t mean the audience doesn’t need to laugh. You may know this by now but Apatow doesn’t make rom-com fluff. Instead he gets to the heart of the matter and focuses on relatively down-to-earth people (foul-mouthed though they…

Off the Shelf…’Finding Nemo 3D’
Finding Nemo is essentially a family drama combined with a new spin on an Abbott & Costello road movie. It’s also deep, affecting and a story about a father getting to know his son, and vice versa (even though they are apart for the whole movie). As Pixar religiously puts story ahead of the effects, what’s on display here is a very touching family element that proves more impacting with each viewing. Sure everyone gets emotionally invested in these characters but it’s chalked up to three factors; lovable design, top notch voice acting and finally Thomas Newman’s brilliant score. Newman (who would work together with Stanton again on WALL-E) creates a theme that is so finely tailored and…

Sweet (Red Band) Featurette…'This Is 40'
The upcoming Judd Apatow joint This Is 40 is the quasi sequel to his 2007 comedy Knocked Up. To help promote the film is this new red-band featurette. In it Judd Apatow and company bring us to speed on what’s happened to Pete (Paul Rudd) and Deb (Leslie Mann) in the five years since Knocked Up. Basically they’re is struggling with the fact their life, marriage and intimacy don’t exactly shine like it did in their younger years. So while this may be a bit blunt and shocking (that’s “Red Band” for ya) Apatow is just trying to tell it like it is…no candy coating in his world is there. Enjoy!…

G-S-T Review…Finding Nemo 3D
Andrew Stanton’s colorful and delightful film literally bursts off the screen in its 3D re-release. A massive hit for Stanton and the animation powerhouse, Finding Nemo significantly raised the bar not only for the studio but for computer animation in general. Impressive world building, Shakespearean like story and characters, the film is endlessly endearing and layered ever so subtly for the kid and adult audiences . Really it was Pixar finding their groove. It showcased hundreds if not thousands of dynamic digital elements, was the biggest jump in story and quality for the studio at the time and would further propel their meteoric success. It also made Ellen DeGeneres a household name (well that…

Ohhh, Look…THR's Award Season Roundtable Series
2011 has been a banner year full of fantastic films both great and small. While we do our very best to give you the highs and lows of the good and bad out there we’ve still only managed to see a fraction of the noteworthy films this year….and it’s not from a lack of trying that’s for sure. Roughly 166 films populated cinema screens this year and we’ve only knocked a fraction of them off our must see list. Of the great number of films out there this year The Hollywood Reporter again showcases the best and the brightest with the return of their popular Roundtable Series. So if you’re like us and find your 2011 “seen…

G-S-T Review…Drive
To those children of the 80’s, Drive might seem like a welcomed trip in the way back machine to the kinds of dramatic films your parents would watch as you peeked through a cracked door. Not a period piece mind you, or even a true 80’s movie, Nicholas Winding Refn’s film just has a timeless look and feel that is both muted and yet bold (like a Michel Mann film). Further, that “look” is made enticing and ethereal thanks to Refn’s stylish visuals and a perfect selection of songs and score from Cliff Martinez. Winner of Best Director award at Cannes, this film has been getting so much attention and frankly it deserves all of it. Hold on tight, Drive is one…

G-S-T Top 10 – Buddy Flicks
First off, let me preface this by saying that trying to compile a great buddy flick list is going to be hard enough. There are so many movies that fit this description it’s almost it’s own genre. To widdle it down to 10 was near impossible so at the bottom I have some very deserving entries in the “Honorable Mention” Category. Next, and probably more importantly, let me tell you all that this list is devoted to my favorite movies out there that have impressive, memorable and hysterical “buddy” plot lines. As you will see in the entries below, some films are formulaic “buddy flicks” but others are indeed not…
