    G-S-T Review…Man of Steel

Well, now, here’s a fine how do you do: Zack Snyder made a good movie. Granted, he’s made good movies before, but it’s been so long since he released his hyper-muscular remake of Dawn of the Dead that seeing him output something that’s actually watchable from start to finish comes off as something of a shock. In the intervening years, he’s made films containing individual sequences worthy of the praise they rightfully receive but which lack a top-to-bottom sense of cohesion; Sucker Punch inadvertently celebrates the male gaze it tries to critique, and Watchmen is at its best in its first twenty minutes, after which the story begins and the…

Sweet Trailer…Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel'

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! Who is it?…you know full well who I’m talking about right? But this isn’t your father’s Superman. Earlier this year two brief teasers for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel were released and they got started quite a buzz. Starring an impressive cast let by Henry Cavill as the titular MoS, Snyder looks to take us up up and away to a Superman story right for the times and to please scores of comics fans. This looks like it’s gonna rock…enjoy! Zack Snyder is at…

    G-S-T Review…The Master

Sitting down to write about Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest cinematic marvel can make you feel inadequate. There’s so many things going on in this 138-minute film that it stays with you hours, if not days, after walking out of the auditorium of your choice. Putting that kind of experience into words can be disorientating. Yet, the film begs to be expounded upon and dissected. If you’re familiar with Anderson’s films, you’ll know the familiar themes here. The film may receive a lot of press and talk because the setting is based in and around “The Cause,” which seems to bear striking similarities to Scientology, but the film is not about that as much as it is about…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Favorite Chris Messina Films

Last week saw the release of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ‘ highly entertaining ensemble indie comedy Ruby Sparks. While high marks go to the directing duo (who also gave us Little Miss Sunshine) and even higher ones going to star/writer Zoe Kazan, this post is an effort to highlight the unsung hero of that charming and highly original film; one Chris Messina. He’s the likable every-man but also has the chops to pull off any and all roles from “that guy” to a capable leading man. Just a solid staple in every film he’s in, his star is steadily rising but he still hasn’t quite broken out yet. In the film world we’ve seen actors like…

Sweet Teaser Trailers…Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel'

With The Dark Knight Rises now in theaters, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have reached the end of Christopher Nolan’s fantastic and hugely successful Batman trilogy. As is the norm these days, just because the credits roll it doesn’t mean the story is over. Case in point. Depending on what theater you were in when you saw the epic finale to Nolan’s Gotham City based story arc, you were party to one of two teaser trailers for the studios’ next highly anticipated release. Next year we will see the reboot of the big blue boy scout but in this re-imagining, like Nolan’s Batman actually, we’re going to get a version…

    G-S-T Review…The Muppets

The Muppets is a long awaited a reunion concert experience that showcases our old friends doing what they do best: singing, dancing, joking and playing music. What is pretty clever is that not only is this a meta story asking and answering the question “where have the Muppets been?“, it reflects the social mindset that wondered the same thing as if the Muppets were living breathing creatures. But even without the involvement of Frank Oz this still feels like a true Muppet movie with all the charm and allure that has kept the property vibrant for decades. The Muppets are a brand everyone knows and as such we were allowed to jump fuzzy…
