Honestly, Does Anyone Really Live Happily Ever After??

(Note: This was written last year but since this post originally focused briefly on elements from theTransformers series, I thought I’d revisit it because the latest installment still kind of helps prove my earlier point.) Here’s something I’ve wondered ever since I’ve started watching films. What happens to the characters after the credits?? It’s something most children ask their parents after they see (or hear) that all encompassing and cliche phrase at the end of a film…”And they lived Happily Ever After“. And since children are among the most inquisitive people on the planet, we should probably take a cue from them and not expect that just because the credits roll that…

Groovers & Mobsters Present: “The Buddy Flick”

In this installment of Groovers & Mobsters, we’re going to look at the “Buddy” element in modern films. It’s taken many forms over the years and come in a variety of iterations but today we’ll evaluate this absolute classic cinematic formula. It’s proven time and again to be a winner and, most of the time, makes for one very funny outing…especially if the characters aren’t having a good time. Traditionally a “buddy flick” (or even a “road trip movie“) focuses on a two-man team who has either been willingly or unwillingly paired together because of some mutual plot device. What follows is a series of misadventures befalling the leads as they continually bump heads (either…

When Is It “Too Late” (Or Unnecessary) To Make A Sequel?

Inspired by the home video release of TRON: Legacy and the original TRON (for the first time on Blu Ray) hitting shelves today, I wanted to look at popular stand alone films/franchises that have several years (even decades) between installments. To date, some are good, some are bad and there are scheduled/rumored sequels to some older properties coming down the pike that seem questionable. To this day, it still boggles my mind that Disney wanted to dust off the original TRON and attempt this sequel a whopping 28 years after Flynn’s adventures in “The Grid”. Now truth be told, I liked Legacy and it did a fine job at continuing the story but had trouble fleshing…

    Groovers & Mobsters Present: "Horror"

Well friends, it’s time again for another installment of Groovers & Mobsetrs Presents. Today we are going to look at the films that make this time of year all the more enjoyable. So fire up your DVD player (or Blu Ray player for those of you who’ve made the jump) and prepare yourself for scares, chills and thrills. On behalf of Fandango Groovers and Movie Mobsters G-S-T looks at one definitive Halloween film and examines why it gives us the willies. Willies? No, I’ll rephrase that…gives us effen nightmares. Oh, I love the holidays:P

Nic Cage & Brett Ratner Should Be Stranded On An Island Somewhere…

Really, what purpose do Nicolas Cage films serve other than a chance for him to showcase his latest wig/hair do?? I admit I love The Rock and actually like the first National Treasure however those are two high points among a resume of  films where I personally find little else appealing. In my eyes, he offers nothing of value to any film and the crazy antics he’s know for just don’t fly in film these days. I will give him that he was pretty damn good in Bad Lieutenant and his small role in Kick Ass was unexpectedly hysterical but face it. You won’t stay in the Yankee’s starting line up…

How Much “Magic” Do Films Lose From the Theater to Your Home?

My guess is that anyone reading this just flat-out loves movies. That said, I want to bring up an issue I’ve been kicking around the old noggin…and it just so happens to be about our little vice. To start this off, I’d like to bring up a situation that most of you have probably experienced and can relate to. Oh boy! Now that’s a theater!! We’ve all had this happen to us right? We see a trailer for an upcoming film and wait patiently for it. Then opening night (or when ever you get around to see it) we pay good money for (what we believe will be) a good…

Does Anyone Want To Watch My DVD/BD Collection? Because I Sure Can't!

How many of you movie fans have ever had this happen? You get the urge to see a movie you own, you think about it for a bit, you walk to your library and then just stare blankly at your choices, unable to make a decision. I do this quite a lot but it isn’t because I have (totally not bragging) over 500 DVD/Blu-Ray titles staring back at me. It is solely because I just can’t find the time to watch what I really want to watch. Now that’s what truly gets me sometimes. I mean, if you have this wonderful assortment of toys just dying to be played with, wouldn’t you want…
