G-S-T Review…The Place Beyond the Pines
Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines is a viscerally pensive film and an enthralling multi-generational drama. As equally well-crafted as his highly received Blue Valentine, Pines is a complex and engrossing film that takes a look at legacies and what we leave behind for our kids. Further it shows us that those legacies, whether we want them or not, can sometimes make life choices for us without our say in the matter. It’s an ever-escalating, multilayered, emotionally bold familial drama that has all the makings of an instant classic. Cianfrance’s sophomore effort tells a sobering story about love and family and further one that despite the best of intentions may all end in a dismal trail of…

Ohhh, Look…Theatrical Poster For Cianfrance's 'The Place Beyond the Pines'
Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine was not an easy film to get through. That affecting anti-romantic story was a devastating look at love and loss and couldn’t have felt any more uncomfortable or real if they tired. His follow up The Place Beyond the Pines, similarly starring Ryan Gosling, got a lot of buzz at the Toronto Film Festival last year and we have to say that the trailer looked impressive. Well the first official poster has been released and it sports the gritty tone of Cianfrance’s film. Have a look… This multi-generational film follows motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover (Mendes) and their newborn…

G-S-T Review…Holy Motors
There’s no easy way to evaluate a film like Holy Motors after a single viewing. That’s why I watched my screener copy twice. Of course, I still feel somewhat behind the eight ball as I try in earnest to write my review, but in my own defense it’s worth noting that I’ve never seen anything like Holy Motors before in my life. (Continuing in that vein: I’d wager that there are more critics who share my position than not.) In fact, the film is so unique, original, and rampantly weird that calling it a new entry in surreal cinema feels like an observation of family resemblance and nothing more. How…
