Exclusive First Listen: Jung Jaeil ‘s Score to ‘Twinless’

Happy Thursday to all you film score fans! And it’s always “happy” when we’re able to share new music on our site. Our friends at Lakeshore Records have let us debut something special from one of the most exciting young voices in the film score game. Jung Jaeil came on the scene in a BIG way with his music to Parasite. The film has a cornucopia of themes that include (but are not limited to) class struggle, social inequality, and capitalism. Further, it’s explored using and blending elements from different genres like thriller, comedy, mystery and horror. It’s tough for some films to do any one of those well, but…

Exclusive First Listen: David Fleming’s Score to ‘Americana’

Composer David Fleming seems to get to the heart of a film better and quicker than any one else in the business. The way he looks at the story and crafts his sound is as inspired as it is innovative. Take a listen to what he did with Damsel and you’ll get an idea of how much his work influences and elevates the picture. Fleming is no stranger to down home music palettes – he did some earnest and emotional pieces for Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy as well as the epitome of red, white and blue with James Gunn’s Superman. With Americana, Fleming embraced country and western music with his…

Music Review…’Cabinet of Curiosities’ and ‘The Rise of the Synths’ are Perfect For Dark Room Listening

We’re quite a number of months away from Halloween season and spooky, pensive and driving sounds that go along with it. But as we approach the hot Texas Summer (and 100 degrees this coming Wednesday!) we put our minds to cooler places. One of the best is the dark of a theater. Or a theater room. Either will do. One of the most enchanting parts of dark room entertainment is being enveloped by the soundscape, and we’re suckers for symphonic elegance and moody synthesizers. As such, today we have just what the doctor ordered by way of Lakeshore Records. Now let’s get this out of the way up front. These…

Music Review…Scott Pilgrim Truly ‘Takes Off’ Thanks to Anamanaguchi and Joseph Trapanese

The animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off gets us back into the wonderful, wild and insanely colorful world of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s original graphic novels. Our first entry point to this universe was Edgar Wright‘s 2010 film which lovingly adapted those works. It was awesome – filled to the brim with Wright’s style and charm, yet the great live-action film retained the 2D atmosphere of the books. Now fast-forward more than a decade later and Netflix dropped this incredibly reverent and all encompassing eight-part animated series. It cherry picks the best from O’Malley’s ideas and Wright’s film (including the voice cast who return and reprise their roles) to expand/explore the…

Interview…Brian McNelis Discusses Vinyl Releases at Lakeshore Records and Experiences in the Music Industry

Thanks largely to a trip to Record Store Day in 2014, I have become an increasing fan of soundtrack releases on vinyl…and I’ve never looked back. You may have your own go-to retailers, and while a significant portion of my collection is comprised of Mondo titles, Lakeshore Records (the independent music division of Lakeshore Entertainment) remains a notable force that issues some of the most vibrant, stunning, and downright bad-ass releases you’ve ever seen. We spoke to the company’s Senior Vice President of Music and Soundtracks, Brian McNelis, about his day-to-day with Lakeshore. As you might expect, after scanning through the hefty number of releases on the Lakeshore Records website,…
