In the world of comedy, there is funny, and there is Paul Feig. The man just knows how to make people laugh, and so much so that it hurts. He’s already got a lovely working relationship with Melissa McCarthy and he himself is a writing/directing dynamo, but it is very unclear where Feig’s brilliance ends and McCarthy’s begins. Perhaps it’s not worth wasting too many brain cells as their latest collaboration is ten kinds of funny, and that’s all that matters. Spy films and their ilk have seen countless, and we mean countless, spoofs, homages, or blatant copycats. Spy is bits of all three and yet still manages to put focus on what is…

G-S-T Review…The Heat
If you weren’t familiar with Freaks and Geeks or just don’t watch a lot of TV shows, then the name Paul Feig probably didn’t mean anything to you until 2011. That’s when a little film called Bridesmaids took the film world by storm and made a star of a certain Melissa McCarthy in one fell swoop. G-S-T Review…Identity Thief
Despite a decent trailer that manages to deliver a few laughs, Identity Thief in its entirety fails to live up to it’s potential. Finding comic relief in stories about stolen identities is far from an original concept, one that’s managed to work fabulously well in films like the Coen Brothers’ 90’s classic, The Big Lebowski, but left in the hands of Director Seth Gordon, whose other comedic ventures include comedies Horrible Bosses and Four Christmases, the familiar comedy of errors scenario is nothing but a chaotic mess. The film opens with accountant Sandy Patterson, played by Jason Bateman, who is duped by Melissa McCarthy’s Diana – con woman and said…

“The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 02/08/13
When so many movies are released each week and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us the cost of ridiculous concession stand prices. Let’s see what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- IDENTITY THIEF Mild-mannered businessman Sandy Patterson travels from Denver to Miami to confront the deceptively harmless-looking woman who has been living it up after stealing Sandy’s identity. Bateman and McCarthy have proven themselves as capable…

Sweet (Red Band) Featurette…'This Is 40'
The upcoming Judd Apatow joint This Is 40 is the quasi sequel to his 2007 comedy Knocked Up. To help promote the film is this new red-band featurette. In it Judd Apatow and company bring us to speed on what’s happened to Pete (Paul Rudd) and Deb (Leslie Mann) in the five years since Knocked Up. Basically they’re is struggling with the fact their life, marriage and intimacy don’t exactly shine like it did in their younger years. So while this may be a bit blunt and shocking (that’s “Red Band” for ya) Apatow is just trying to tell it like it is…no candy coating in his world is there. Enjoy!…

G-S-T Review…Bridesmaids
The female ‘The Hangover‘ this is not. And this film, which is a lot cuter and heartfelt than you’d expect, is probably getting a lot of steam based on that misconception. Make no mistake, anyone wanting a raunchy female comedy will get their money’s worth as this is a laugh riot. But hidden amongst the girl crazy antics is a sweeter film than expected. Moreover, what looks like a crazy series of events befalling all 6 members of the bridal party is really about Wiig, Rudolph and Byrne. Its a mostly endearing film that plays fairly to both male and female audiences and that’s a rare feat in film these…
