Video Interview…David Harbour on Hopper, Horror, and Big Hair in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

For most of this year, we’ve been getting ready for the upcoming season of Stranger Things. We’re still more than a week away, but one thing that took our mind off the wait was the chance to speak with David Harbour. That’s right, Police Chief Jim Hopper himself was in Dallas as part of a press event to promote the show. While in the Big D, he was treated to some of the best baseball and BBQ we could offer. Hey, it’s the least we could do. Thanks, Dallas, for making David feel at home. He’s already a pretty laid-back guy (I spent close to an hour with him in…

Interview…Brian McNelis Discusses Vinyl Releases at Lakeshore Records and Experiences in the Music Industry

Thanks largely to a trip to Record Store Day in 2014, I have become an increasing fan of soundtrack releases on vinyl…and I’ve never looked back. You may have your own go-to retailers, and while a significant portion of my collection is comprised of Mondo titles, Lakeshore Records (the independent music division of Lakeshore Entertainment) remains a notable force that issues some of the most vibrant, stunning, and downright bad-ass releases you’ve ever seen. We spoke to the company’s Senior Vice President of Music and Soundtracks, Brian McNelis, about his day-to-day with Lakeshore. As you might expect, after scanning through the hefty number of releases on the Lakeshore Records website,…

G-S-T TV: ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Is Your New Obsession

(We’re trying something new here at Go, See, Talk!: we’re talking about TV now. GST will remain a primarily movie-oriented outlet, but we’re expanding our brand and slowly starting coverage on the television shows that we’re interested in the most.) I’m not going to pretend that I don’t have a tiny bias in favor of Orange Is the New Black‘s continued success as the seventh Netflix original series; I love Weeds, half of it anyways, and I have a completely random personal connection to Jenji Kohan’s latest endeavor to boot*. But when have I ever allowed my biases to keep me from singing the praises of the movies and television…

    Off the Netflix Queue…’Headhunters’

It ain’t easy being short. Boiled away of its particulars, that’s the central theme of Morten Tyldum’s Headhunters, although “don’t involve yourself in corporate espionage” could well be the larger takeaway. After all, no good whatsoever can come from invoking the wrath of Jaime Lannister, especially a Jaime Lannister armed with nano-technology designed in service to tracking human beings. But Tyldum instills an abundance of textbook male security in his hero, one Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie), a man who lives his life under constant self-induced stress and paranoia. What does Roger have to fear? He has a high-paying job as one of Norway’s top employment recruiters, a modern domicile of impeccable…

Off the Netflix Queue…'Jiro Dreams of Sushi'

If Jiro Ono, the subject of David Gelb’s documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, hadn’t found his passion in making sushi more than seventy years ago, he very well could have found a lucrative, successful career in life coaching. In his 80s and still working more steadfastly and efficiently than most young men in their 20s, Ono professes early on in the film his belief that one must fall in love with their profession and that hard work is “the key to being regarded honorably”, a sentiment which he expresses directly into the camera. He speaks with a firm but quiet earnestness that nonetheless bears a timbre of erudite command; you…

Off the Netflix Queue…'The Red Violin'

Go,See,Talk is proud to present this Off the Shelf/Netflix Queue entry as the first post from our new contributing writer Jessica. She’ll be making more appearances on the site in the next few months and we’re glad to have her aboard. So enjoy her view and welcome her to G-S-T. I am drawn to films that are capable of introducing an audience to multiple story lines, and then carefully crafting them together so that these seemingly fragmented parts become one whole by the end. So when Netflix suggested The Red Violin, about the life of one mysterious violin and its many owners, I imagined this multi-narrative structure would likely be…

No More Qwikster, Today or Ever Again!!

In a surprising reversal by Reed Hastings, founder and CEO of Netflix, he’s announced that the DVD split from Netflix would not, repeat NOT be happening. Following the recent, very bold and commercially unpopular changes to Netflix, Hastings has decided to nix the idea of the Streaming/DVD split and instead keep things just as they are now. Whew…that makes me feel better, but has the damage already been done?

The State of Netflix: From the Mouth of Founder/CEO Reed Hastings

Seems like Netfilx has been in a rough patch as of late. First the rate changes, now the split from Starz Entertainment, and now a rebranding?? We already know that Netflix will continue to stream movies (though they’ll be short 1000+ titles when their contracted Starz catalog agreement expires in Feb 2012) but now there’s a name change as well as the addition of video games to their library?? Sounds like there’s a lot more going on under the hood so it prompts us to wonder what does the future hold for this mighty giant killer? Well, in a surprise email this morning I, and every other person with a Netflix account,…

Netflix Instant – Death Dealer to the Personal Video Library?

They say that video killed the radio star, and frankly if it wasn’t true they wouldn’t have written a song about it right? Well friends, as per the news from last week, I guess in a few years time we might hear a tune touting how Netflix killed the video store…and I’m guessing a slew of film fans’ personal video libraries while they were at it. And while I’m not entirely sad to see Netflix take down Blockbuster I am a little mournful about the haymaker they’ve dealt to the mom-and-pop shops and even my own personal library. Headlines aside, it’s that last bit has actually been the inspiration for today’s’ editorial so lets get started shall…

Woah, Netflix and Starz Entertainment Part Ways

As if news of the Netflix pricing increase (or jack if you ask me) wasn’t enough of a blow to loyal Netfilx customers, today’s news is another unexpected body blow. For those who have fallen in love with the Instant Feature, this will sadden you to hear that Starz (who is gives Netflix a huge portion of the Instant titles) has decided not to re-up the existing content deal. Translation: the 1,000+ movies offered in the Netflix Watch Instantly service will not be offered once the current contract expires in February 2012. Wow, talk about a hay-maker huh? For those interested have a look at the official press release after the jump:
