His films have become synonymous with larger-than-life characters, edge-of-your-seat action, and a dose of irresistible charm.

Whether he’s playing a heroic federal agent in Fast Five, a jungle-hopping adventurer in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, or an ancient anti-hero in Black Adam, Johnson possesses a magnetic screen presence and unmatched charisma that has ensured his roles have resonated with audiences worldwide.

In celebrating the best live-action lead roles for Johnson, we celebrate his versatility as an actor and his ability to dominate the big screen. From adrenaline-pumping heists in the Fast & Furious franchise to the heartwarming lessons of Gridiron Gang and the playful chemistry of Jungle Cruise, these films highlight why Johnson continues to reign supreme in the action genre.

  1. Red Notice

Dir. Rawson Marshall Thurber (2021)

Red Notice manages to deliver an agreeable mix of action, comedy, and crime that’s elevated by the charisma of its cast which includes Johnson as an FBI profiler who joins forces with Ryan Reynolds’ art thief after a double-cross lands them in the same jail. Together, they must break out and take down the master art thief (Gal Gadot) responsible for their predicament.

The film boasts some energetic car chases, intense fight scenes, and clever humor, as well as a few entertaining plot twists. Reynolds brings his signature comedic style, while Johnson’s larger-than-life persona adds to the excitement. Gadot’s portrayal of a cunning and ruthless character adds another layer of intrigue.

  1. Central Intelligence

Dir. Rawson Marshall Thurber (2016)

Central Intelligence follows the unlikely partnership of Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart) and Bob Stone (Johnson). Calvin, once voted “Most Likely to Succeed,” feels like a failure despite his good job and charming wife. Bob, formerly an overweight high school outcast, has transformed into a muscular CIA agent who’s still socially awkward and endlessly adores Calvin. Bob seeks Calvin’s help to clear his name after being accused of treason and killing his partner, leading to a series of hilarious and thrilling escapades.

The film never takes itself seriously and boasts an engaging, twisty plot, smartly choreographed action scenes, and memorable comedic moments. Johnson’s portrayal of Bob Stone captures the actor’s effortless charm with a touch of vulnerability. His dynamic with Hart is straight out of the classic buddy comedy movie playbook, providing audiences with an entertaining mix of laughs, excitement, and genuine friendship.

  1. Gridiron Gang

Dir. Phil Joanou (2006)

Gridiron Gang tells the inspiring true story of Sean Porter (Johnson), a counselor at a California juvenile detention center who starts a football team to teach troubled teenagers about discipline and responsibility. As the team progresses, they find success on the field, ultimately competing for a state championship. The film does not shy away from the harsh realities these kids face but balances them with enough hope to maintain a family-friendly PG-13 rating.

Some of the most compelling scenes occur early on, highlighting the ongoing struggles of released teenagers as they navigate gang-infested neighborhoods. Director Phil Joanou masterfully captures the intensity of the football sequences, while the film’s real strength lies in Johnson’s spirited portrayal of Porter. In one of his earliest lead roles, the wrestling star conveys passion and determination in what remains one of his most moving roles.

  1. Black Adam

Dir. Jaume Collet-Serra (2022)

Black Adam stands out as a fresh, engaging, and complex addition to the DC superhero universe, led by an exceptional performance from Johnson. The film centers on Teth-Adam, an ancient champion reawakening in a Middle Eastern nation plagued by corporate-mercenary oppression. Initially depicted as a frightening force of nature with a destructive appetite, Adam’s journey towards becoming a hero is compelling as director Jaume Collet-Serra skillfully blends intense action with moments of heartfelt introspection.

Johnson’s portrayal of Black Adam channels classic anti-hero tropes with a modern twist as the film explores moral gray areas, combined with a sharp edge and richly textured characterization. With visually impressive action sequences, a stirring musical score, and a cast of well-rounded supporting characters, Black Adam is one of the better entries in DC’s Extended Universe.

  1. Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw

Dir. David Leitch (2019)

Hobbs & Shaw delivers a whirlwind of over-the-top action and witty banter, making it a fun addition to the Fast & Furious franchise. The film sees Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) reluctantly teaming up to take down a genetically enhanced villain, Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), and help Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) clear her name and save her life.

Johnson’s charismatic performance as Hobbs stands out, capturing the character’s blend of brute strength and humor. The film’s ability to surprise and delight with its creative action sequences and the chemistry between the leads makes it a delightful, escapist experience and showcases Johnson’s knack for bringing larger-than-life characters to the screen.

  1. Jungle Cruise

Dir. Jaume Collet-Serra (2021)

Jungle Cruise takes audiences on a thrilling adventure down the Amazon. Set in 1916, the film follows English adventurer Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her pampered brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) as they enlist the help of riverboat captain Frank “Skipper” Wolff (Johnson) to find the mythical Tears of the Moon, a petal with healing properties.

The movie’s charm lies in the playful banter between Blunt and Johnson, whose on-screen chemistry keeps the story engaging. Director Jaume Collet-Serra skillfully channels the spirit of classic adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone, while updating the tone to shed the colonial undertones of the original Jungle Cruise ride. Johnson’s portrayal of the gruff yet endearing Skipper is a standout, showcasing his ability to balance humor and action effortlessly. This lighthearted romp is a must-watch for anyone craving a swashbuckling adventure with a modern twist.

  1. Jumanji: The Next Level

Dir. Jake Kasdan (2019)

Jumanji: The Next Level continues the adventurous saga of a group of friends who once again find themselves inside the magical video game, this time joined by unexpected allies. Spencer, now a freshman at NYU, returns to the game as he misses the confidence he had as Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson). When he goes missing, his friends Martha, Bethany, and Fridge re-enter the game to rescue him, only to find themselves in swapped avatars while Spencer’s grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his friend Milo (Danny Glover) get pulled into the game as well.

Johnson once again shines as the cranky yet endearing Eddie, bringing boundless charm and plenty of humor to the role. Like its predecessor, Jumanji: The Next Level finds a neat balance of humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments which, alongside themes of friendship, courage, and self-discovery, make it an enjoyable watch for both returning fans and newcomers.

  1. Furious 7

Dir. James Wan (2015)

Furious 7 continued the high-stakes adventures of Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and the rest of the gang as they face their most formidable foe yet – Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Seeking revenge for his brother Owen Shaw, Deckard sets out to eliminate the crew, pushing them to strike a deal with the government to secure a technology called “God’s Eye” that can tap into security cameras, phones, and more.

While the plot serves primarily as a vehicle for the film’s dazzling car stunts and explosive action, it’s the enduring themes of family and loyalty that give Furious 7 its heart. Director James Wan, making his first foray into big-budget action, masterfully balances the signature elements of the Fast and Furious franchise with his unique visual style. From breathtaking car chases to intense hand-to-hand combat, the action sequences are both grounded and immersive, drawing viewers into the adrenaline-fueled narrative. Meanwhile, Johnson’s commanding performance as Luke Hobbs adds another layer of intensity, marking one of his most memorable roles.

  1. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Dir. Jake Kasdan (2017)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle takes a fresh spin on the classic Robin Williams film of 1995 as a group of teenagers are transformed into video game characters. Following Spencer, Fridge, Bethany, and Martha as they find themselves transported into the Jumanji game as their avatar counterparts, we meet Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), and Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black).

Together, they must navigate the game’s challenges to escape and return home. The film’s charm lies in its entertaining blend of humor, action, and heart, as the characters learn important life lessons while navigating the treacherous game world. Johnson’s portrayal of Spencer’s avatar captures both the rugged heroism and the vulnerability of a teenager trapped in a superhuman body. With its clever twists, witty banter, and lush visuals, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a delightful adventure that showcases Johnson’s versatility and charismatic screen presence.

  1. Fast Five

Dir. Justin Lin (2011)

For many, Fast Five (aka Fast & Furious 5) is the best film of the franchise that began in 2001. The film follows car thief Dom Torreto (Vin Diesel) and ex-police officer Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) as they flee to Brazil, pursued by international law enforcement for theft and murder. Their audacious plan to rob a local crime lord of $100 million requires the help of a diverse crew of skilled thieves and drivers, leading to intense chases and daring escapes.

Johnson is federal agent Luke Hobbs who is hot on their trail, bringing an explosive dynamic to the film with his alpha male presence. Fast Five blends heart-pounding action, exotic locations, and stunning cinematography with an appealing ensemble cast and an unpredictable plot. Johnson’s performance stands out as one of his best, adding a powerful, charismatic element to the already electrifying mix of characters.
