Update: 'The Dark Crystal' Sequel

Oh happy day for all you Gelfling fans!!  I just got done reading this ‘nostalgia pleasing’ post from MTV where it seems that, after years of rumors and off/on production details, the sequel to the beloved The Dark Crystal is now one step closer to pre-production and ultimately, the Silver Screen!!  In the post, Brian Henson (son of Legendary Jim Henson) talks about how this movie and a Fraggle Rock film are “Ready to Go”, they just need to finalize some financing…hit this link to read the full post…

The Dark Crystal is a film that I just love!!  Now, I’ll tell you right off the bat that I’m not a huge fan of sequels, to say nothing of sequels to perfect movies or sequels way after the fact that it’s no longer relevant, but this is incredibly intriguing.  If the “very strong script” that was hinted at in the MTV post has anything to do with the proposed synopsis from years ago (see below), I’d say I’m game.

“Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, Power of the Dark Crystal follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.“

Thanks to TheMovieBlog for digging it up.  If this is still the direction, I like that it takes place so long after the events of The Dark Crystal, but that’s just me.  To make something like this work (without upsetting fans) you almost have to distance the plot from the beloved characters and story, so making something this disjointed but keeping the central element is a good move I’d wager (I’m not a Star Trek fan but I’ve been told that’s why most of the different series worked and went over well with the fans).  Lastly, I really like that Genndy Tartakovsky is still attached to direct.  He has done some incredible things with Star Wars: Clone Wars, (which I thought were better than Lucas’ prequels) not to mention the popular Dexter’s Lab, Samurai Jack and The Powerpuff Girls shows, so it’s clear he has proven experience making entertainment for kids and adults.

With all that said, I guess I know what film I’ll be watching this weekend:)  What do the rest of you think?  I know this is way to early to have a solid opinion but from just an “idea” stance, are you excited at the prospect of this film?  Or are you completely against a sequel?
