About Time‘s central romance doesn’t involve Rachel “Mean Girls” McAdams or Domhnall “Son of Brendan” Gleeson; the real lovers here are Richard Curtis and the tricky notion of time travel. How else to punch up a story that’s all about the rich existential rewards we reap from living a boring, ordinary life? Curtis employed the deceptive pleasures of coincidence to achieve the same effect in 2003’s Love Actually, though admittedly there’s nothing humdrum about the personal relationships of Prime Ministers and rock gods (or divine intervention, even if that never made the final cut). Here, he overturns a similar stone by using a far more incredible narrative tool for his…

Sweet Trailer…'X-Men: Days of Future Past'
While some weren’t too fond of Matthew Vaughn’s entry to the X-Men franchise (don’t know how that’s possible, we happened to LOVE it) it seems Fox though they could do better. So how might that be achieved? Well one idea would be to bring in some big guns and so Fox was able to coax Bryan Singer back for another adventure with his X-babies. The trailer just dropped for the sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class and as our header states it is SWEET! If this isn’t a sure fire way to kick off the (early) Summer season next year then I don’t know what will. For now, enjoy!…then later mark your…

Off the Shelf…’Monsters University’
In the prequel to Pete Docter’s monster hit (yes, pun very much intended) Monsters, Inc. this new story takes us back to the beginning, to a time before Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan were the very best of friends. It’s an interesting decision to take to expand on the mythology of this world but also one of the smartest moves the studio could have made. Going the prequel route (the first for Pixar) allows them to expand on and explore more of the film’s most lovable characters. Now for a studio devoted to and known for innovation and originality to take a step back might seem odd or like they’ve…

G-S-T Review…All Is Lost
Margin Call director, J.C. Chandor takes quite a different direction with this second film, All Is Lost, starring Robert Redford as a nameless man who is lost at sea and fighting for survival. Where as Margin Call was heavy with dialog, All Is Lost experiments with other forms of communication, from the sounds of nature to the thoughts inside the man’s head that we do not hear, but that we can imagine from the facial and physical queues Redford uses to portray them. At first this description might seem to recall the role of Tom Hanks in cast away Castaway, except Chandor’s and his crew faced the added challenge of…

Sweet Trailer…'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'
When it comes to the first Captain America film (well, the first one in Marvel’s slate of movies leading into 2012’s The Avengers), I tend to feel like I’m in the minority of people who dug its pulpy pleasures. I’m calling it right now and predicting that reaction won’t be quite so split for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which frankly stands to be the best Marvel production to date. Maybe this is just a case of trailer shock, but I don’t think so – watch the above two minutes and forty seconds’ worth of footage to see for yourself. Now that’s more like it, Marvel. Now that Phase One…
